My crappy CV strat got an overhaul...

Yanked off the anodized pickguard, took out the POS chinese bridge and replaced it with a full steel one from Gotoh.
Found my old distressed parchment guard, a few parts from my old Tokai strat, and other stuff, new electronics, switch, potmeters, wire and such, switchcraft jack.
Lux Gotoh vintage tuners, Wilde Micro Coils....
And my slow process of trashing it up.....hehe it is cheap after all, so it needs help in the feel department!
Now it is one expensive cheap guitar....but it is a fun project...and keeps me out of mischief with my other stuff.

My first project at my new home workshop....
Now I need to set it all up in there, got to use my new mini router as well....hehe
A rather fun guitar now, still a cheap pos...but a fun one with a voice of its own now...
Only need to replace the nut now...

Re: My crappy CV strat got an overhaul...

Those CV and VM guitars are some of the best for the money out there.

Re: My crappy CV strat got an overhaul...

Yep.
And they are great fun to mod too!
Both my Tele and Strat have been upgraded.....now I will not really part with them...
Lots of instrument for little money!

Re: My crappy CV strat got an overhaul...

dude, that's pretty sweet.. Squiers have come along way in recent years. You get alot of guitar for a little money now, indeed. The CV's are def nice.. I have a Squier J5 Tele, along with my 96mim strat, that I will never part with.

Re: My crappy CV strat got an overhaul...

Out of curiosity, why are the springs on your vibrato set up in that V pattern?

Re: My crappy CV strat got an overhaul...

Thanks guys...
Hmm old habit...and I like the "feel".....Dunno have used it for decades now...straight springs feels slightly off when I use the vibrato, like the combination of two more tightly wound up springs and a single normal mounted spring in the middle.
I use the vibrato alot....really just an old habit born out of a feel thing...
Almost all other three spring strat users I know, do the same...
Not much to it.

Re: My crappy CV strat got an overhaul...

3 springs in a "V" is left over from Hendrix. Many guitarist tend to copy Jimmy. I use 3 springs on my Strat and all are straight for even tension.

Awesome project! The Japanese Squiers are awesome! I have one that I got in pawn shop dirt cheap and its one of the best strats Ive ever played. The stock pups were aweful and the pg was a single ply, but swapped those out and its fantastic!

Really? All this time I thought the 'V' pattern is the standard one cause that's how it's installed when I bought mine new.

Re: My crappy CV strat got an overhaul...

Hi,
I saw Hendrix in Berkely I think and in one of those he plays with his teeth and you can see, at at one time or another he used all 5 springs. His bootlegs are so outta tune, I just wish he woulda tried to float it so it would have had a better chance to settle back in tune. I believe he was always decked. Not that I would tell Hendrix anything. I might mention maybe.
Anyway, I've been fanning my springs 'cause I saw J. Beck do it all the the time. Hey, ya know there is this brand new thing we should get off topic on, it called an "ANGLED CLAW" yeah, and..........................................................., Just kidding. Beautiful guitar. Did you paint that white yourself? Most white fender strats look a tiny bit on the cream side. Anyway, good job,
Steve buffington

Re: My crappy CV strat got an overhaul...

Looks good. It's not much different than what Bill Nash does to Fender style guitars.....then he sells them for $2000.

I'd probably sand the remaining finish off the back of the neck though. That's the thing I like most about reliced guitars.......not the beat up body.

Re: My crappy CV strat got an overhaul...

Thanks.
I am not going to trash the body anymore than it is....do not like that overly distressed look to those.
Yeah the neck I'll sand down.....once I am going to refret in the future, I'll strip the fretboard of laquer as well, oil and wax it instead...love that feel.
Gonna keep the laquer on the head.
Stick a bone nut on it as well...

Hendrix V shape springs....not really.

Re: My crappy CV strat got an overhaul...

A bone nut always improves things. Recently, I've been using $15 Tusq XL nuts rather than bone, because they're almost finished, and they're equal to bone. That's one product that's worthwhile.

Re: My crappy CV strat got an overhaul...

Man i have some cool ideas for modding a strat like that. I want to get a cheapy with a pickguard and route it out for 2x 7 string pickups that sit on an angle to the six strings. like they did with this monster http://www.mayones.com/en/custom_shop_gallery/setius_dive_bomb_xtrem36_en In addition to that silliness i think it would be cool todo a charvel/jackson style cutaway on the back

Yours looks awesome especially with that maple fretboard.

Re: My crappy CV strat got an overhaul...

I love my LSR so much, it really does work well, and no one around here is anxious to to install one in my other trem guitars. I have enough nerve and backyard experience ALSO balanced with enough stupidity to try it myself. As long as I can mark and measure where the normal nut was, added to the fact that I am not selling any of my guitars ever, I am not worried if I screw it up. I can always build it back up to where it was before. Plus I WILL use directions when normally I would not.
Steve.

Re: My crappy CV strat got an overhaul...

Got a LSR on my CS Beck strat....I had hoped that I still had my age old Wilkison nut somewhere...but I cannot find it...
Guess I'll just get that bone nut done soon then ;)
