My current amp collection. Pics!

Re: My current amp collection. Pics!

Have you thought about anything of the Dumble flavor?

I like Robben Ford and Larry Carlton a lot, and have plugged into a Dumble OD Special and Six String Stinger, but I haven't sought out any Dumble clones like Two Rock or Fuchs. The reason is that those tones can be found with the right OD pedal running into the Matchless Chieftain or Pro Reverb.

When people see the Matchless, they automatically assume it's a Vox style amp, but the Chieftain is different than the DC-30, which is an AC-30 type amp. The Chieftain is actually pretty close to a Dumble, since it's an RCA Bassman preamp running into 2 EL-34's and a 5AR4 tube rectifier.

Re: My current amp collection. Pics!

Yeah, some amps can really close to that tone with the right pedals, and touch. I've thought about picking up a Bogner or Matchless combo down the road. I've got two Alston amps... one is a Dumbalina MkII 1 off that has repros of the transformers from SRVs Vibroverb with ODS style overdrive and then an Alston Overdrive Combo (AOC) MkII which has the ODS style and HRM style overdrive modes, as well as the clean mode. Each mod also has a tone bypass foot switchable mode and an independent volume control for each modes' TB... So the combo has 6 tone to tap into and the Dumbalina has 4. No real need for clean boosts or OD pedals, unless you want to drastically change the tone by using a pedal thorugh the front end.

The Bogners also seem to be pretty laiden with features under the hood. Do you typically leave amps with those types of features alone or do you still incorporate some OD or dirt boxes with those types of amps? I am really interested in something lik the XTC but have no use for an amp with that much power and with being visually impaired, lugging around a half stack is kinda hard lol

Amps like the Bogner XTC really don't need dirt pedals at all, and I almost never use one unless it's a Fuzz Face or something with a specific character. Plus, that amp has a boost on all three channels.

My only reason for having as many OD's as I have is for all the clean to midgain amps. My style is similar to Pete Thorn, Audley Freed, John 5, and Bonamassa, so I spend a lot of time in the clean and bluesier side of things, but also started playing in the early 80's, so rock, metal, and shred is second nature as well.

I'm always messing with guitars, amps, and pedals, finding perfect combinations. Once I know what they are, I'm basically a 'set it and forget it' player. That's why I have an answer for many gear threads here.....it's not second hand info, it's real experience from my years of trying everything under the sun, from the time I was 10 till now.

Joe - which one is the ONE amp…if we are going to break in a steal all the rest, which should we leave for you?

It's funny because I made the XTC my main amp for 14 years because it covers almost everything in one package.

However, I apparently chased all primary classic amps, just to go right to the authentic tones by acquiring clean old originals.

In the end, the XTC is the best way to gig with a lot of classic tones, which makes it my favorite, but on a desert island, a dream rig would be the Bad Cat 50 for high gain, JCM800 212 combo for rock tone, Matchless for edgy clean, and Fender Pro Reverb for clean. I'll take the Klon and handwired Tube Screamer to the desert island as well.

Big Island , Eh?

How do you like the Gold in the Chieftain?

The Chieftain has a gigantic pushed clean tone with piano like low end, tons of mids, and it's highs have been dictated by 2 V30's, which have good bass and mids, but the highs aren't all that sweet or complex. That's where the Celestion Gold comes in.....with sweeter mids and clean detailed highs, and probably less bass. It works really good but if Matchless put Golds in their amps, the price would be even higher.

I've always been a purely Vintage 30 guy, but in the past few years, I've been mixing in other good speakers like the H30 70th Ann, Creamback 65, Gold, and Emi Swamp Thang. Even the G75's sound good with the right amps. They sort of get a bad rap for no reason. I'm finding they mix really good with the Orange sound.

You pretty much answered here what I was going to ask: When you have that rare Saturday or Sunday afternoon, when you have a moment to yourself, and you just want to jam . . . what do you pick up, and plug into? :)

Sweet collection. I dig how organized you keep your music room, but i am a little disappointed that you've got 4 half stacks and not 2 full stacks :smokin:

Re: My current amp collection. Pics!

Nice collection!

I've actually got a Bad Cat Cougar 50 on its way to me; will be here day after tomorrow. Does she like V30s? I have a 2X12 ready and waiting but could use your experience.

Re: My current amp collection. Pics!

i have the combo version and it comes with a v30. it works well with both channels and while im sure there might be a better speaker it sounds good enough that i havent thought about swapping it.

Thanks bro! Looking forward to my NAD on Thursday!

Re: My current amp collection. Pics!

i bought it cause i got a great deal like joe. but im impressed. both channels are really good for what they are and much more modern voiced than anything else i have. there is a ton of gain available. so much so that i swapped a 12au7 for the second 12ax7 but im used to vintage nmv amps. some have complained about reliability but i havent had an issue with mine and have used it on plenty of gigs

Re: My current amp collection. Pics!

Good to know!

I got a stupid deal on mine as well - $395 plus $50 shipping - couldn't pass it up!
