My custom string sets

Re: My custom string sets

Where are you getting the tension pounds numbers?

Me, I keep trying to get myself to like 10's, but on 24.75" i keep coming back to 11-54 sets... fine with good 10-46 on 25.5" though

Well, we all know just how sensitive you are...but are you that sensitive that your enjoyment is sacrificed/diminished if you are forced to use predetermined sets by the big string companies?

Absolutely. Standard packs feel and sound horrible to me. Also you have to remember, I play clean through a small combo so it's gonna make more of a difference for me than for you with your stax cranked with gain. The pack that I could deal with the most would be NYXL 10-46s. But I don't like the rubber bandy plain steel strings, and what the hell do I want a floppy 6th string for?? My custom sets cost the same as a pack of NYXLs anyway.

No it's because my playing is not held back by such minute and trivial fallacies that I've somehow used to convince myself is the cause of any lack of progression. I found sets that work for each guitar just fine and as a result I play those guitars, I instead of sitting and pining over individual gauges because "my fingies hurt when I do bendies on this stringy but not on that stringy" lol!

Bah. Some fret over what color their pickups are.

It's not a big deal to pick the set you like. I play whatever strings, just like my custom sets better. And they don't really cost any extra either.

Interesting

Could get pretty even ~19.5 lbs tension on 24.75" scale, but their lack of a wound 29 makes an even 25.5" with 11's a pipe dream

DOES having identical tension on all strings help, though?

Wow -what a cool site.

It pretty much confirmed in seconds what I already calculated with a lot of aggravation.

On my only regular 25.5 Im running tensions in the 14/15s except for 4 and 5 which are a bit higher.

It's D'Addario only though...

Good news for me -I only play DAddario lol. -not true -I use DRs on one of my weird setup studio guitars.

I played GHS when really young (because thats what the shredders played) and Ernie Ball growing up gigging (because they were everywhere, good, and cheap) -And DRs for a while (while I dig the feel overall but are inferior sounding to D'addario IMO), but D'addario are just better than all of those and D'addario NYXL are my favorite.

Re: My custom string sets

Yeah you about have to use a brand specific tension guide because they all have various core-to-wrap ratios and different alloys.
I've ran my favorite custom gauge sets on a few different calculators and they all show different results, which is fine because I go by feel anyways.

Juststrings bulk-singles in the 12pks are a great value and they seem the same as EB in feel, tone and tension.

They sell balanced tension packs, but I actually like the bass strings a little tighter since they feel looser than the treble strings if they're at the same tension. But yeah it definitely helps to have the tensions in the same general range. Chords ring out way better, you have the optimum balance of body to flexibility, and you notice it with your picking hand changing from string to string being easier.

Re: My custom string sets

I too have messed around with individual strings to make my own sets. This whole point is to suit yourself, so it's not odd that others would find ones custom set to be unsuitable.

When I first learned guitar, I blocked my vibrato unit and strung my Strat 15–58 with a plain G. I played it that way for 8 or 10 years, as my only guitar, before getting a second guitar (an SG) and learning to appreciate more typical strings.

Now my go-to sets are 11–52. My variations are to go slightly lighter on the wound strings on some guitars (11–50, 11–49, or 11–48), and to use .022W or .024W on some guitars, instead of an 18P.

15?! For high E????

Re: My custom string sets

I used to have one setup for C with a 13 high,,,,,,,glad I don't anymore lol,,,,,can't even imagine a 15.

Most of us find our favorite custom sets by simply tweaking a standard common set, which for me was a power-slinky set at Eb,,, and a heavy-top/light-bottom for D.

I now like Eb with 10,13,18w,28,38,50,,,,,and for D-standard 10.5,14,20w,30,40,52.
Also, I use the same sets on my two Carvins. They feel the same on either scale IMO.

Re: My custom string sets

I would love a 10, 12.5, 17, 26, 36, 48 on 25"5 neck scales.

I never saw 13,5

(David Gilmour GSH set for 24"3/4 has a 10,5)
