My DD3 died after 3 decades -picked up a DD7

Last weekend, I received a Boss DD7 . -Haven't even opened the box yet, but looking forward to the long delay times, Analog mod, reverse and other updated features Boss has packed in.

My DD3 lasted 3+ decades and was my favorite go to digital delay -the issue is at the chip level so I'm moving on.

Anybody using a DD7? thoughts?

I'm going to compare it to my other digital delays this weekend and report back.

I use one for my multi-tap stuff. I also have a Carbon Copy I use for more reverby spacial delays. I think you are going to get another three decades out of the box.

I had one which I thought was underwhelming: It didn't work at all in front of an amp (didn't have fx loop then, so can't say about that) and when off buffer added plasticky sheen on the highs I didn't care for.

people like them so maybe they work better in loop? I love tone of my Dunlop Echoplex that I as well keep in front of amp, it actually sounds much better there than in loop.

Ever since I tried an EHX Canyon, I have not been able to enjoy any other delay pedals. It's so good, I might even shell out the dough to buy the new Deluxe model.

That's my worry -I have a lot of vintage amps -not many effects loops in my roster -but my big ass Marshall JCM800 does -so we'll start there!

Mine definitely colors the sound. Seems to add top end. “Plasticky sheen on the highs” description by @Jacew actually a good description. This in front of my amps. though i.e. not through an effects loop. And this when in use i.e. cannot say this happens when the thing is off. Can also cause phase issues and introduce comb. filtering with short stereo delays (not sure if it’s just these or digital delay pedals in general). Otherwise a nice pedal!!! LOL!!!

(Sad part: I have a cheapo NUX stereo delay, was for a time my ONLY pedal, and it doesn’t color the sound, but doesn’t allow me to simply delay one channel by 10ms - 20ms or less).

Best way to descibe it I think Satriani's Surfing with the Alien guitar tone has that sort of thing going on.

Martin Sheen, Charlie Sheen, Emilio Estevez...wait a minute...Plastic Sheen....
Or all this pedal stuff is just about what works on some and not on others.....
Use 8 buffered pedals....got nae sheen.....

Ok, so I played the DD7 for about 2 hours last night....

So far... super powerful, definitely has some amazing stuff here

downside is I don't really feel the controls are that easy to dial in for some reason (maybe it's just experience with this pedal) -lots more searching to dial in than a DD3 etc -maybe it's that so much is loaded into this one pedal.

haven't messed with Analog setting or reverse yet -

tap tempo works great

Right now I'm looking at picking up a DM-2w.

Right now I'm looking at picking up a DM-2w.

I tried the DM-2W, but ended up liking the DD-2 / MIJ DD-3 better. In terms of tone they were pretty similar with the DD-2 being slightly more bright and punchy. Can't say that I care for the New DD-3, DD-5, etc all that much. If I want a super clear hifi sound, I'd rather use something with more configuration options like a rack unit, Nova Delay, Strymon, etc.

Damn, so I had a short tour this last week, and I got the DD7 on my larger rig before I left town and I could immediately hear a noticeable tone degradation from the buffer circuit only with the Pedal in bypass/off.

Sucks, they can't possibly be all like this from Boss, this pedal clearly has a component that has an issue, I bought it in a Used/Swap style music store and it was traded in used -but brand new with tags and all -so I have a feeling it was traded in for a reason.

I don't think this is a proper representation of what Boss is typically offering in a DD7.

I am going to reach out to Boss -will report back.

I have a DD-7 which isn't on my board anymore since I replaced with the a Boss DD-500. BUT the DD-7 is a fantastic delay pedal and I didn't experience any of the plastic tone changing as others do. I also run my delay in the effects loop. I can put the delay pedal in there in the off position play, take it out play again and no change in tone. This was not my experience with the Carbon copy which darkened my tone even when the pedal was off. The Timeline did that as well. It's why I use Boss Delay pedals. I have a Waza Analog and it's transparent as well.
I think your gonna find great delay settings with the DD-7. It's real close to analog delay when using that setting. It's a real nice delay and that was my personal favorite.
If you find yourself wanting more, then return it and get the DD-500, its a nice step up from the DD-7

Have you given a newer DD3 a try? If so, does it really lack that much in your opinion? (compared to the MIJ DD2/3 versions)
I love mine despite it not being "the good chip".

It really depends on what you're looking for in a delay. If you're looking for bright and punchy digital delay, then a new DD-3, DD-7, etc. will work fine. IMO those newer delays are too bright, but something like a Carbon Copy or DM-2W is too mushy. The DD-2 and MIJ DD-3 occupy a nice middle ground with more clarity and punch than a CC or DM-2 without being super bright like the new DD-3.
