My dream tele has a couple of problems

So my friend and I put together a telecaster with all the bells and whistles.
It sounds amazing but has 2 issues and I was wondering if anybody here has
Any idea why this is happening. So first of all is:

The tone knob works but the whole sweep is within a quarter turn of the knob.
If you turn it any further it doesn’t change.

Second is the switch for the neck pickup to be in or out of phase doesn’t work.
If you just have the neck pickup active it doesn’t change anything. But if you have
Both pickups active or just the bright it kills the sound completely.

Here’s the wiring diagram we went by. Thank you for any help that you can give.

Re: My dream tele has a couple of problems

Check the wiring on the tone control. Also what taper is the pot?

If are going to put the pickups out of phase, be aware that the neck pickup’s cover is grounded, and the black (-) lead from the pickup is attacked to that cover. So when you flip the polarity you are shorting out the bridge pickup.

Also If you touch the cover when in reverse polarity, it will cause a loud buzz, because the cover is now hot and not ground.

You need to separate the ground from the pickup coil and run a separate ground wire to the cover.

It might be easier to switch the bridge pickup. But watch how the steel plate under the pickup is wired.

Re: My dream tele has a couple of problems

flipping the phase of a pup only will sound different when both pups are on. then the two pups are out of phase. if only the neck pup is on, it will sound the same. there is a lot going on with the wiring so a high quality detailed picture will help a lot. does everything work the way it should if the pups are in phase?

The diagram is using humbuckers but what is in the Tele, are they Humbuckers or some kind of Tele single coils? (Picture is too small on my phone and dark for me to tell if there are rails or stacks or what)

Re: My dream tele has a couple of problems

Thank you for the replies, so I’m afraid I don’t know much about the pots but these are the ones I used (my friend is did all the electrics) https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B008S5TZ46/ref=ppx_yo_mob_b_track_package_o2_img?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Everything works perfectly when the guitar is in phase and she sounds beautiful. I’ll try and get a photo of the wiring later on.

Yeah they’re a set of Seymour Duncan sthr-1 pickups so they are humbuckers. Everything else works brilliantly but the phase switch.

Re: My dream tele has a couple of problems

Its a 500k linear pot. The better choice is a audio pot, maybe with a lower resistance. But i am afraid that a no load pot is not availiable as a push/pull switch.

Re: My dream tele has a couple of problems

Is your pickup-series switch a true SPDT or DPDT on-on only switch? Because if it isn’t (eg if it’s on-on-on), it might ground out the sound when flipping the neck phase.

So this is kind of amusing, I took the control plate out and took some photos and now the in and out of phase switch works. I couldn’t get a good photo as the wiring is really tight. So happy 😊😊

Re: My dream tele has a couple of problems

Wouldn’t surprise me if the bare wire from the pickup, next to the green, was touching the switch when it was all packed in there. I usually take some insulation off of other pieces of stripped wire and cover bare grounds like that.

Re: My dream tele has a couple of problems

^^^^ That, and just for future projects, take note of the gauge of the pickup wire. You don't need anything larger than that. Makes shoving it all in there much easier.

Yes!

I see people using that awful cloth covered wire. It’s too bulky!

It’s also a good idea to use at least two colors.
