My Fender Bassman is come!!!

Re: My Fender Bassman is come!!!

Yeah, I was gonna recommend checking the fuses too, but I'd still take it in to get a complete check-up.

Re: My Fender Bassman is come!!!

I forgot about the fuses...it's possible one could be broken or blown. Did the seller have a good feedback rating, and was the amp in working condition before he shipped it?

Re: My Fender Bassman is come!!!

+1 for fuses. My JCM600 needed a couple new fuses when it got here. UPS apparently wasn't too kind to it on it's way from Denver.

Re: My Fender Bassman is come!!!

Thanks for your concern, guys. The seller has 100% feedback of about 25, I think. He's a friendly seller and keeps good, open communication. I just got an e-mail from him today. The seller apologized and said the amp was working prior to being shipped. He also suggested taking a look at the fuse and wants to help as much as possible.

So, I'm kind of a tube amp IDIOT! How would I go about checking if the fuse was blown? Is it easy to replace? Would this really make it so my amp is getting ABSOLUTELY NO power whatsoever?

Please, SD Forum members, save another brother from the grips of dream-tone inhibition!!! :yell:

Re: My Fender Bassman is come!!!

I have no idea what the fuse holder looks like on a bassman... look on the back, usually it's a little round black thing (man, how to describe things in a bad way) which you turn to take the fuse out. It should be easy once you find it... the fuse should come out easily and then you just have to replace it with another one exactly like it...

Re: My Fender Bassman is come!!!

Is it a '59 Bassman Reissue? If so, the fuse will be the very first thing on the back panel, to the left of the on/off and standby switches. Unscrew it and replace it with another 3 amp fuse.

Re: My Fender Bassman is come!!!

Whatever you do, do not open up the amp and start poking around. Tube amps, even when turned off, can have enough charge in the capacitors to potentially kill you. If it was working when he shipped it, and nothing obvious is wrong with it, then it should hopefully be an easy fix. I'd recommend taking it to an amp tech, having him fix it, then submit an insurance claim to UPS to cover the repair bill. If you're only asking for the cost of the repair and not the cost of the amp, there's a good chance UPS will pay up.

Re: My Fender Bassman is come!!!

When is severe doubt ti may be time to look for an amp tech, im sure it can be fixed but, but have atech look it over may give you piece fo mind... that sucks i know how it can be to have your hopes up and then shot down.

Re: My Fender Bassman is come!!!

UPDATE!
I checked out the fuse and it seems to be blown. I can see a few black streaks in various spots on it. I will head down to Radio Shack tomorrow to see if I can get a replacement. Would this be wise?

Re: My Fender Bassman is come!!!

just make sure you match the fuse rating ... it will be something like "2 amp, slo blow" .. you want to match the current rating

Re: My Fender Bassman is come!!!

The blown fuse is a good sign that it might be something minor. Bring the old one with you & get a few replacements....they're cheap.

Once you can, though, I'd highly recommend taking it to a tech & have him go over it to check all the caps, rebias, clean the pots etc etc....give it a good check up & give yourself some peace of mind that it's in good working order.

Good luck Bro....

Re: My Fender Bassman is come!!!

Curly's right, just make sure you get the right type. Using a slow blow fuse where you should've used a fast blow can result in the amp needing extremely expensive repairs.

Re: My Fender Bassman is come!!!

ANOTHER UPDATE!

Ok, guys, I got matching fuse replacements, but they all blew out, so I took my Bassman to a tech that specializes in vintage Fenders and Marshalls. He'll be looking over it later today and I'm going to come back later to see what's wrong with it and get a price quote. The guy says it's probably a simple repair and will be at least $15 (includes a full amp service), so that's not too bad at all. However, I'm going to try to get all new EH tubes and possibly replace all the caps.

We'll see how this goes...

Re: My Fender Bassman is come!!!

What a drag not being able to play your new gear. Hang in there -- I hope it all gets straightened out quickly and cheaply.

How should I go about telling him? Just send him an e-mail telling him to pay for my repairs or I'll leave him negative feedback? I'm not very good at online hostility :yell:

My Bassman is a 1970s, not quite sure of the year, but it does say CBS on the back. If all goes well and the repair is quick, I'm going to have it modded at Voodoo Amps.
