My Fender Bassman is come!!!

Re: My Fender Bassman is come!!!

i think spending a few extra dollars to fix it is the right thing to do, tell the seller that you had to pay extra to fix the amp, and it would be appreciated if he could help cover some of the costs because of your "financial" situation. Regardless you MUSt get that amp working!

Re: My Fender Bassman is come!!!

Yeah, I would mention that you took it to a tech & he's gonna give it the once over to see what the problem is. If the actual repairs are anything more than $20.00, I'd let him know with a little stronger language that he should help cover the costs.

Personally, I've bought a couple of used amps & I go into it knowing I'm gonna take it in to get it checked, cleaned, rebiased, etc etc.....If the thing isn't completely trashed, it's money well spent for peace of mind knowing that the thing is gonna run properly for more than a month.

I guess what I'm saying is, if the repair costs aren't completely over the top...fuses & tubes die...I wouldn't sweat it & get worked up about it.

It sucks.....but so do alot of things!!!!! :laugh2:

Re: My Fender Bassman is come!!!

What tubes are in there? If they are original and in good working shape there is no need to replace a thing. I have 3 heads with 40 year old tubes in them and they sound fantastic. Wait til you get a chance to really get that amp running and then if your tech says a change is in order go for it. But if not generally speaking old tubes are better sounding. Good luck!

Re: My Fender Bassman is come!!!

Blown fuse. Could still just be a bad output tube. Sometimes a bad output tube will take a resistor or two out too. Still...no big deal. When I buy an amp online I fully expect to have to retube it and recap it and do some upgrading. I'm pretty picky and I like everything to be better than perfect. If it turns out to be a bad tube and even if you need to replace a few caps or resistors I personally wouldn't hammer the seller for a partial refund. I expect stuff like that when I buy a 30 or 40 year old tube amp.

If this is one of the first tube amps you've owned, and you expect to use this amp alot, you'll be replacing alot more tubes, caps and resistors in the future...especially if you gig with it regularly.

They're like tires, belts and oil changes for your car or truck...or fillings or getting your teeth cleaned! :) Just part of the deal.

Re: My Fender Bassman is come!!!

How did the seller ship it? It sounds like he's an honest guy, and that it was working when he shipped it. I would file an insurance claim with the shipping company asking that they cover the cost of the repair.

Re: My Fender Bassman is come!!!

Thanks for your concern, guys. I checked back at the guitar shop today, and the amp tech took my Bassman to his workshop. It will be undergoing diagnosis and he said he can recap the whole thing for $60-$70, but wants to make sure everything else is functioning properly first. The Electro Harmonix tubes will be ordered shortly, and basically, the guy wants to bring my amp back up to fighting condition because he seems to have a soft spot for vintage Fenders! ;)

Yeah, so I'll see how much this will all cost, and then maybe just tell the seller about how much it costed me, but leave it up to him whether or not he's gonna pay. I have no evidence of this being his fault, so I don't think I'm at liberty to point fingers.
