My first Garageband recording!!

Cat In The Hatministrator
I've finally got around to recording something in Garageband. I've only done it over the weekend, and all tracks are first take, as I just wanted to try and get a song together.

Let me know what you think. Any and all constructive critisism greatly received.

Thanks

I realise that the track is a little quiet, and I haven't found how to improve that yet, although it could be that I recorded at levels that were too quiet...

Re: My first Garageband recording!!

sounds like ur first too, but no matter cause you have talent, nice lyricz/singingz, I always wondered what musicians that eat lots of lobsterz sound like

Re: My first Garageband recording!!

i like the fat rhythm sound. Needs more sparkle, but that's alright. Nice melody lines. You need more voice control! The drum programming is good. you need crash sounds tho!

Re: My first Garageband recording!!

Yeah, I'm still trying to "find" my singing voice. I find it easier to belt out when singing live, but a lot more difficult in a recording environment. I did everything in one take, so there are sloppy bits in all the guitars, especially the solo, and I could have probably done with a few more passes at the vocal. I'm quite pleased with the drum sounds, as they come direct from my old Yamaha QY-70 sequencer...

Re: My first Garageband recording!!

Maybe your singing position or the mic position should be altered for a better access or breath balance.
You just have to put some cymbals here and there to point the riffs and different parts.:)

Re: My first Garageband recording!!

I think I'll try recording the cymbals separately. There are some in there, but they obviously get a little lost in the overall mix. I sang sat in front of the computer, so the music was quite low so that I didn't get any bleed in the vocals. Perhaps I need to give a little more volume on the backing?? I don't feel comfortable recording with cans, so that might prove to be a problem...

Re: My first Garageband recording!!

This is a very good example! He has no problem with bleeding, and he forms his body to give the right amount of airflow.

Re: My first Garageband recording!!

you shouldnt sing sitting down and then record, like slim shady said, stand up

Re: My first Garageband recording!!

Well, it's all a learning curve eh?? :D

I'm pretty pleased for my first effort, and I've got a few things to think about for next time. I'll probably record another couple of tunes, then maybe revisit this one and see if I can do a better job.

Re: My first Garageband recording!!

Oh, and that is a good example! Plus he actually has a singing voice!!

Re: My first Garageband recording!!

Yes, I like your song and that's why try to help improving it hahahah.
He was always a terrific singer, he was singing for Steve Vai!

Re: My first Garageband recording!!

The track rolls smoothly. I think maybe you could cut a bit of the low mids fom the guitar track, and let the bass fill that space.

One thing that really helps the feel of the multiple snare hits near the transitions, is to go into the track at 128 spaces instead of 16, and vary the hits by three or four in either direction.

This makes them sound just a bit off, like a real drummer would.

Nice tone and solo, and rhythm tracks :)

Re: My first Garageband recording!!

Thanks for that. I'm going to play with the swing of the drum track a little to try and "humanise" it I think. I was quite pleased that the drums came out the way they did, although still a machine I thought they sounded ok. Ultimately, I'm aiming to get Logic and use some real drum samples for the future.
