I originally posted this in the Amplifier Central forum as part of an amp-related thread, but seeing as how it culminated in an actual clip I thought it best to add it to this forum as well.

It's a very short clip ( < 30 sec. ). This is the intro riff to Sabbath's "Sweet Leaf." Please keep in mind that this is my first time recording anything on my own so I kept it short and simple. However, it was still a good learning experience. From this I realized:
  • I need to get better at double-tracking myself.
  • Equalizing something coming out of your amp and into your computer is a real bear, so I didn't bother (this time around).
Since this is my premier foray into home recording PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE give me any constructive feedback you can.

Oh, I forgot to add that this is a Les Paul Standard w/SD JB bridge pup into a Keeley Time Machine Boost (vintage side set to "1973") then into the Normal channel of a Vox AC30 RI. The amp's volume is dimed and I used a 16-ohm THD Hot Plate to tame it.

Nice tone Keith! IMO you got the perfect amount of grit and dist for this type of riff!

But I think it's a little bit, don't know how to describe it... Boomy.

Thanks! I think you're right about the amount of grit. The problem is the tone isn't thick enough. My tone sounds buzzy compared to Iommi's; I think I'm too high on the treble.

Wow. Thanks for the compliment. Incentive for me to keep going. :)

I used an SM57 pushed right into the grille, pointing toward the center of the cone. I'll need to experiment with mic placement as well. I may get a second mic to place a few inches or a couple feet away and see how it goes mixing the two.

I like it better then iommis (not as flubby) and its nowhere near harsh maybe the cut needs to up a tad more.

"Better than Iommi's..." Wow! I couldn't ask for a better compliment since I love his tone! :D

Luckily I wrote down all the amp and pedal settings. The cut is a tricky control on this amp -- seems tough to figure out when to raise that or lower the treble knob -- but I think you're right about starting there, James.

yeah it is better!!It does not soud so good for you because:
1)you played it so it is hard to think you beat your idol
2)you have to think an overdubbing ,double tracking ,a bass and the drumms will change the whole world
3)AC 30 baby!!!

True, all those other instruments are missing and would fill out the sound even more, the bass most especially. I don't have a bass. :(

Does anyone know of a backing track for "Sweet Leaf" -- one with just the bass and drums? (Or does anyone want to put one together for me? ;) )

i can write and record the drums next week for you.my bass needs some repair though!!!so let the bass made by someone else!!!

Wow! That would be awesome if you could do that. If I could get drum and bass tracks I promise to do all the guitar work. :arms:
