Re: my god, hell has frozen over and the impossible has happened.
heh..Les Pauls do that to you...
When I first started playing...I was into "flash"....my first guit was a Dean strat copy w/ a Kahler trem..black finish with red/yellow flames..LOL. POS. Then I got an Explorer cause of Mathias. At the time, I thot Les Pauls were just stupid looking "old folks" guitars. I loved my explorer...and then my V. But they weren't quite right.
Eventually, I started to realize many of the sounds I liked were being made by Les Pauls. So I finally bought one...a LP custom. And I was floored. The unique tone. The incredible sustain. The way it balanced/felt. Even though I was used to a tune-o-matic in the Explorer and V, the LP felt better...it felt more natural.
From there I turned into a Gibson freak..with LP's always in my posession. Then I got into other players...the era of the superstrats...I got into charvels and jacksons, and Ibanez....I eventually sold my Les Pauls. Those superstrats eventually didn't do it for me. So I got another LP...then tried to find jackons/charvels/ibanezes that felt/played/sounded the same. No such luck. My pRS was close...but again.. no cigar. Then I got into HB eqipped Fender strats. Loved em..but it still wasnt the same. So I got a Heritage H150...wasn't quite right, but did satisfy my LP lust.
Got out of playing for many years...as I got back into it, I wanted more strats/superstrats...cos my musical tastes had changed somewhat over the years while I wasn't playing, and I was trying to convince myself that I needed such and such Strat/SuperStrat...for versatility..for the scale length...trivial things. I sold my LP (heritage) and started gobbling up strats/super strats..Eventually I started to miss the LPs again... The tone...the way the bridge put my hand in a more natural position...the fat necks...the angle of the neck...the balance...the sustain.. the "bloom". So I got another LP, and again instantly...the old friend was back. I picked up my strat yesterday and it felt like an alien...I couldn't hardly play it...it sounded thin...almost harsh...no sustain comparitively...it just didn't sound or feel as good as I thought it did. It was a struggle to play...I got so frustrated.
I've tried to deny it over the years..usually so I could justify the GAS to try something else, but the fact remains...Gibsons and especially Les Pauls are the ultimate guitars for me. All is right with the world when I'm playing them..the tone I want is there..the feel I want is there...and because of that I play better and am more inspired. In the end , regardless of the instrument of choice, that is what REALLY matters.
I like a lot of guitars...from a great many companies...But I have an unconditional love for Les Pauls. No guitar on earth is quite like a good les paul. I ogle the pics online...I ooh and ahhh at the bursts....I drool over the customs inlays and binding....I want a deluxe with mins..I want a black custom...I want an R8...I want a GT w/ P90s and a wraparound...because they are all a little diff... but a LP nonetheless. I cannot say that about any other guitar make or model. I have no desire to know all the differences in model years for strats or teles...let alone buy multiple versions..I don't want a McCarty and a C22 and a c24....
yeesh :smack:
See what I mean about the way they "do that to you"?..I just wrote a friggin love letter to a hunk of mahogany and maple
