My JB hums o.O

Hey guys,

yesterday I could play my guitar with the JB for the first time. I must admit the tone is great but it hums :smack: I think the guitar technique made everything alright, it´s his job for years. So, if I play distortion and activate my neck pup (DIMarzio/IBZ) nothing hums when I switch to the JB is hums almost like a single coil. What´s the matter?

Re: My JB hums o.O

Either the pickup is installed improperly, there is a bad ground somewhere or you have a pot that didn't like being heated up and has gone bad.

When properly installed the JB should not hum.

Re: My JB hums o.O

I'm with robert on this... sounds to me like a grounding issue. If you're competant, I suggest opening 'er up and checking the ground points. If all is grounded, get a few new pots. And get CTS 500k pots, those are the sh!t, also, I'd get a new switch and new caps... a new wiring harness never hurt anyone.

Re: My JB hums o.O

i would probably bring the guitar back to the guy who did it. everybody makes mistakes, even people that are great at their job, and he probably takes pride in his work. bring it back and let him know whats up, its probably something simple

Re: My JB hums o.O

Thx. Yeah I called him and told him about this hum-thing. Next week I´m going to see what´s wrong.

Re: My JB hums o.O

bump :burnout: (I always wanted to do that)

So, the pup is ok. He showed me another guitar with the same pup in, same thing. I stand too close to the amp. It is like 2 or 3 metres and the pup shows into the amp direction. Did anyone make the same experience? Too close to the amp and huming? Cause my DiMarzio doesnt hum even when I´m in the amp.

Re: My JB hums o.O

your neck doesnt hum and the bridge hums? this shouldnt be.. if it's high gain and close to the amp both should buzz slighty, but that comes from the amp and the gain, not the pups themselves. i say he forgot to wire the gound or wired it like a dimarzio, in which case it's wrong cos the colors are diferent

record another clip a bit louder and dont play anything, just switch between the neck and bridge pup, cos what i'm hearing from the clip is just normal high gain buzz

Re: My JB hums o.O

If the guy or girl wired it like a DMZ, then what you have is the red to hot, the green to ground and the black and white tied together ... SD translaton ... the screw coil is on and the slug coil is off ... single coil.
If the *tech* didn't connect the shield/drain from the four conductor to ground, then that can produce noise as well. That must go to ground, and the connection must be good. Robert has a good point about the pot as well, if each pup has it's own volume then that could occur as well.

Re: My JB hums o.O

I forgot to mention the pots. There is 1 Volume Pot and 1 Tone Pot and one 5-way switch. I will record the stuff. It´ll start with the neck DMZ and than switch over to the SD. Same settings. I´ll post that clip later.
Thx for your help.

Re: My JB hums o.O

Alright. I have my guitar now. As long there is no PC, TV etc. everything is fine. Just a light hum because of the gain. I love that thing!!!

Thanks Seymour Duncan!

Dunno why it´s ok now, but the secound guy knew what was going on. :laugh2:

Re: My JB hums o.O

when you're near the monitor or tv, it will hum because of the monitor magnetic field interference with the pups.. you can negate that by getting a TFT or LCD monitor hehe
