My MIJ Ibanez FL-9 flanger came in the mail today!

There's been a few flanger-oriented posts around here lately, so i thought I'd chime in with my latest pedal grab. I got it today and spent a few hours playing with it this evening.

It's an MIJ Ibanez FL-9 flanger, the banana yellow one. Mono output, takes 9VDC, four knobs for regen, speed, width, and delay. A quick peek under the hood reveals it's stock. All analog goodness with no unmoddable stamped-in parts on the PCB. :D

I like it a lot! For $100 I was expecting something good but not fantastic... it's not the most amazing flange sound I've ever heard (i need true stereo for that) but it's very very cool. Very warm, detailed, crisp sound... no tone loss at all and an almost imperceptible amount of noise when engaged. No drop in signal like my old reissue MXR unit I used to have, either. Different settings revealed subtle flanges and chorus-like effects, cool warbles, deep/wide spacious sounds for solos, etc. There's probably some tricks I haven't figured out yet. No big jet-planes to be found in here like in the MXR units but careful blending of the regen and delay knobs can get a subtle sweep that makes playing And The Cradle Will Rock passable and fun. :D

It sounds good in front of the amp as well as in the loop... I don't quite know where I'll keep it in the chain yet for my regular rig. Probably in the loop, knowing me. Paired up with some delay it really sounds beautiful.

I've never tried the reissues, so i can't compare them... but for the Original MIJ units I give a thumbs up!

I have not bought it yet, but will soon. From all the sound sample I've heard its the best to my ears. I like flange that is kinda slow, really warm and thick, and to my ears its all there. I think its the pedal if you wanna catch the "Bridges of Sigh" thing ... I have the CS9 chorus and I think I am done with choruses as far as my live rig goes, the tweakability of that thing is beyond any belief if you think its only two knobs.

What part of Bridge of Signs are you speaking off because the main effect Trower used on that was a Univibe ?

I have the same one. It's a good flanger. Only use it for subtle effect. Works perfect for that. One thing to look out for -> the rubber backing falls off easily. Get some adhesive spray and let it dry before applying velcro tape or it will stay on ur pedalboard when u take it off!

Yeah I've had that problem with other pedals too. I was planning on making a quick trip to home depot for the velcro and a little adhesive.

just got the reissue. I like it okay. never tried the original though

although I've been wanting to share about another analog flanger I've had forever. I'll do it here, try and stop me

it's a DOD FX-70 "Stereo" Flanger. I think it's funny. Has 2 knobs only, speed and regen. Have to crank the regen to get it to flange even a little. Just doesn't sound like a flanger, more like a lush, slow chorus, with a bit of phasing. *Very* subtle, pleasing, soft, shimmery and warm.

Funniest of all? One output. Well, how is it "stereo" then? What am I missing?

Seriously. What am I missing? Did they label it wrong?

One of the nicest sounding pedals I've ever heard, and the warmest stomper I've ever heard that says "flanger" on it. Like it's owner, it's a true weirdo.

Yeah, it kinda does lie in that grey area between a flanger and a chorus, dunnit?

Re: My MIJ Ibanez FL-9 flanger came in the mail today!

Speaking of good flangers, has anyone made a decent knock off of the old A/DA? Should I give up the dream of finding a cheap A/DA and just look for an original MXR?

The Title Track/Day of the eagle, I did not say nail it, "catch that bridges of Sigh Thin" to get close wise ... I have CS9 chorus and Laney AOR if read around different board every now and then you will some guy say that he can get some of that Richie Live in Japan tone out of an AOR, well with my CS9 into AOR's clean channel I can get a bit of that Richie Blackmore's rainbow "Catch the Rainbow" vibe and its Laney AOR and CS9 not and AIWA r-to-r AIWA into the insanely modded Marshal Major, the vibe and a little a bit of that sound not nailing, I think FL9 does that with Trower's stuff ....
