Re: My name is Curly, and I have a problem ...
thanks everyone!
I was trying to find a story I read about the history of this EB model ... it was originally a pink burst prototype known as the Axis, due to its design - "on axis". Albert was given an early one by Sterling Ball, and he loved it. So did Paul McCartney, and he got one as well.
It eventually became Albert's signature model, and Axis became the name for the EVH guitar after EVH split with EB.
I played one years ago, and thought they had a short scale, because the guitar was so easy to play. (it's a regular 25.5" scale)
I went to play one about a month ago, and that darn little "Jetson meets strat" body was surprisingly comfortable! The neck shape to me is pretty vintage in feel - the profile is a fairly rounded C shape with a vintage nut width. EB fans love the neck finish, which is gun oil/ wax. A very broken in feel, but they do require occasional maintenance - maybe once or twice a year.
These are all spec'ed with birdseye maple necks, and lightweight ash bodies. They have an active system used to can the hum - we'll see how that works.
They go for about $1200 new; this was an '04 for $700, so it was a pretty good deal.
Artie, yes, I've been checking out the Silhouettes too ... I kinda like the SSS Specials, but they come in a few configurations, including the SSH.
Chip, I was mostly focusing on the tone when I tested one, so didn't really note the controls - I'm sure I'll like that, since I'm used to strats, and don't have a problem with the controls like some players. The input jack is on the side, kinda like a tele, but a different type jack. And yes, 5 bolt necks. EBs have one of the most stable, solid, tight neck joints around.
thanks for taking a look at my new ax - I'll try to post a follow up after I've played it, maybe I'll make a few clips by this weekend.
take care,
G
