my name is Curly, and I love amps ...

Curly

Moe's Bluesman
while I'm waiting for some guitars to be put together ....

Here's the start of my next amp ....
Based on Stratdeluxer's recommendation, I finally got Dave Hunter's Amp Handbook. He has an amp project in there, so I ordered the parts, and started putting the board together last night:

two%20stroke-board.jpg

it's a dual, single-ended amp with 2-6V6s, an 8 and 10' speaker, about 10 watts max

the chassis and board are based on a tweed Princeton ... I've drawn up a custom cab in CAD, and plan to build it myself if possible, with some help ..

I'm kind of excited to get back into amps a little bit ... these kind of projects are always a learning experience.

I can't wait to hear how this is going to sound.

Hehehehe that Two stroke (I think it's the name?) seems cool eh?

I REALLY want one someday. You can try a lot of octal tubes with it, and there's only one preamp slot. It'd be a GREAT bench to try valves!! Not to mention it wouldn't have been put there were it not tasty in sound :D Have fun building it, and do clips when it's done of course ;)

The way I saw it you could use a single 6V6 for bedroom... and a KT88 or 2 V6s for gigs and the likes. Great concept.

Re: my name is Curly, and I love amps ...

yes, the "Two Stroke" ... I can't help but want to call it the "Two Stroke Lead" ... sorry, a golf pun for the non-native English language folks ..

anyway, yes, quite a few switching options, from 2-6V6s at 4/8 ohms, or even a single 6L6 or EL-34 at 9 watts through a single 8 ohm load

I kind of talked myself into this ... I have several parts I ordered for another 5E3 and 5E7 build. I also pulled out a 10" alnico Mojo speaker, like those used in the early Fender '59 Bassman RIs

I also saw a 1x12 Heritage amp that was so nice looking that it inspired me to build something similar ... blonde & black tolex with a cane grill.

Re: my name is Curly, and I love amps ...

Other thought...
This amp as a head, and use it with a variety of cabs.

That would be an AWESOME recording amp! With all those tone and tube options available...

Re: my name is Curly, and I love amps ...

Ah that is one nice small kit Curly...bet it sounds great!

haha, Rid ...

your "Cornish" thread reminded me about this ... it's based on an amp that Dave Hunter says he co-designed with Pete Cornish, very similar to his current Romany amp

Re: my name is Curly, and I love amps ...

Looks like a fun project, and I'm sure you'll make it look and sound great.....as evidenced by your guitar projects.

definitely ... Hunter also suggests that you could build it as a head, then use different cab options

although, I'm mostly a combo amp fan

the advantage of a head is that you can find head versions of a tweed Princeton cab that fit the chassis, but the combo version will require a cab build

Sweet! Did I read your first post correctly? It takes both an 8" and a 10" speaker?

Ah ok...hmm I must dig up our uboat captaintubeamp builder for that one:D
Or maybe I should make one myself in my sparetime, our resident tubeguru is giving small info on this and that...he already gave me his little AC-15/30 clone head some years ago...love that amp above everything else...it is alittle funny about speakers, but once you get the right ones...wow!
Love small powerful amps with sweet voices!

Re: my name is Curly, and I love amps ...

That's a great book isn't it? He's supposed to start selling the kits again soon according to a blogger who's been in touch with Dave. Coincidentally I was just looking for updated info about the kits yesterday and came across the blogger.

I suppose the kit form just makes it easier to get the parts all at once.
I'm looking forward to 'hearing' how the finished project turns out.

Rid,

Darn, I was WRONG ... the Two Stroke amp I'm building is similar to a Denis Cornell Romany

but it is a little different:
true class A, dual single-ended, double speaker combinations, 3-way boost, and other output tube options...

I'm using an adapted 5F2A chassis, (although I'd prefer a flat aluminum chassis), tweed Princeton PT and Hammond 125 SE OT.
I'll use alnico speakers, since I had a spare 10" Emi.

Re: my name is Curly, and I love amps ...

Steve,
thanks for that info ...
I looked on the publisher's site and couldn't find any current info ...
just says,
"WE REGRET WE ARE UNABLE TO TAKE ANY FURTHER ORDERS AS OF MONDAY, NOVEMBER 6. PLEASE CHECK BACK FOR FURTHER NEWS"

so the blog site was helpful ... there are a few errors that he corrects regarding component values, etc...

Good for you, you are going to have a blast building it. And it won't be your last one either. I've got that book as well and have considered that circuit before, but I'm still up in the air for my next project.

Re: my name is Curly, and I love amps ...

Cool looking build Curly! It should sound awesome! Here's a pic of my 5F2-A build. Good Luck with yours.:D BTW,I see you used Sozo caps.:headbang:

I ordered some caps from Sozo to try in a guitar circuit, and I was very pleased with his prompt shipping, service, prices, and the quality of his caps. Plus, I think it's good to support a small operation like that when possible.
The parts list in the book calls for carbon film resistors, except for the two carbon comp 100Ks.

regarding your Princeton, what are you using for trannies, and cab/ speaker?
