My name is Trevorus and I'm a Tele-holic

Re: My name is Trevorus and I'm a Tele-holic

Not me, I'm a Strataholic, but i do have one Tele. Wouldn't mind to own another though, a Tele-Gib somewhere down the line. Same reason a have a buncha diffrenet Strato's I can also see Telefeinds wanting the different variatoions on the theme (blackgaurd, late 50's, 60's, modern).

I have just found that I really dig Telecasters. I always thought of them as Twangville so I never played them...boy have I been missing out!

Nice collection you have there!

Re: My name is Trevorus and I'm a Tele-holic

nice teles, guys!

i have a tokai tele clone that i like a lot - ash body and maple neck/fingerboard

it's not super awesome special as guitars go, but it is plays real well, is good looking (kinda like a 52ri with a yellow-y buttercotch color and a black guard) and very fun to play for a classic tele vibe ... and it makes me focus on playing well because it is unforgiving ... and because it was inexpensive, i don't mind keeping it out on a stand to make it easy to grab when i have some free time

a few years ago i swapped out the stock pickups for a set of Seymour Duncan vintage stack for tele pickups - gotta love noiseless, especially when sitting in front of a computer learning something off a youtube lesson, jamming to a backing track, or transcribing a song or whatever ... sounds as good as it feels and looks now ...

i also did the 4-way mod that allows for both pickups to be connected in series as well as parallel (pretty huge sound)

so i got the idea that it would be cool to be able to more easily and less destructively take the neck off and put it back on ... with airline travel hassles, i thought it would be cool to be able to disassemble it for packing in a carry on ... so i looked into using threaded inserts and machine screws instead of wood screws

after researching, i bought the 8-32 E-Z LOK stainless steel inserts with the associated E-Z LOK drive tool and 1 3/4" 8-32 stainless steel machine screws ... i was particularly glad to have the correct tool for the job - there is a keyed tang on the drive bit that fits into a notch in the top of the insert to assist in driving it straight

- disassembled the neck from the guitar and inspected it (very straight - essentially no relief - and no twist)
- checked for fret level with a rocker tool and only found one slightly low fret (2nd)
- secured the neck to the table of my craftsman table top drill press
- took careful measurements of the depth needed to allow the inserts to sit slightly below the surface of the wood
- wrapped tape around the bit corresponding to the depth and set the depth gauge on the drill press spindle
- opened up the holes in the neck where the wood screws had been with a 1/8" regular drill bit then a 1/4" forstner bit per the instructions that came with the inserts
- put the drive tool in the chuck and aligned it over the insert resting on the hole
- lowered the spindle and turned the chuck by hand while maintaining downward pressure with the spindle handle to start screwing in the insert
- got about 2/3rds of the way in with pretty substantial effort before the whole thing just seized up ... couldnt get it to budge and the keyed tang took a substantial chunk out of the top edge of the insert itself
- had to fight it with a short wide screwdriver to get the insert out of the neck
- upon inspection of the hole, found nothing that might be impeding the entry of the insert
- tried a second insert in the same hole with same results ... the inserts got severely chewed up and i was pretty pissed that the $$ tool was not getting the job done as advertised

looked for plan B - thanks joe at rockrabbit guitars for your excellent video on youtube

- decided to use a machine screw screwed into 2 hex nuts and then into the threaded insert to full depth - used an extra deep socket in the drill press that gripped both of the hex nuts
- repeated the hand-turned chuck method and all 4 inserts went in easily
- screwed the neck onto the body (each screw a little at a time untill all 4 were snug) and the joint was flat and tight

while i had it apart, i swapped out the steel barrel bridge saddles and replaced them with brass, compensated saddles

i eyeballed where the saddles should go based on where the ones i removed had been, being careful to get the orientation (low-high, high-low, low-high) correct, knowing i'd have to set the intonation more precisely once the setup was done

i strung it up with d'addario XL110s

determined my preferred string height by bending up the high E string a minor third from the 20th fret until it didnt fret out

matched the curvature of the saddles heights to the 12" radius of the fingerboard

i strummed a few cowboy chords then a few barre chords and instantly could tell that it had been worth it ... the guitar was noticeably louder acoustically

so i tuned it a half tone sharp and stretched the strings out and then retuned to pitch then let it set overnight

i'll do the intonation tonight

then i'll plug in and see how it sounds and feels

100% of my electric guitars are Telecasters. Granted, that's only two guitars, but it's still 100%.

One has a traditional 3-barrel bridge, Vintage '54 bridge pickup and a Firebird neck. The other has a modern 6-saddle bridge and a set of '59 humbuckers. Together, they cover pretty much anything I want to play.

Re: My name is Trevorus and I'm a Tele-holic

I love teles! got a borrowed (for 10+ years) '86 mia with antiquity II firebird neck and 7.5k a5 homemade bridge pup, homemade swamp ash esquire with my ugd pup (tapped 11k/6.6k a2 tele bridge), usacg/warmoth swamp ash/korina neck with a pair of seth lovers, homemade chambered swamp ash/sycamore top antiquity II jag neck, homemade 8k a2 bucker middle, '53 tapped jd for strat bridge, and a homemade chambered alder/maple top seth neck double screw a2 brobucker bridge. I like my teles in many flavors

Re: My name is Trevorus and I'm a Tele-holic

...Sigh. Maybe I admit it. I just spent a while hammering power chords on my Tele (through a DS1 , of all things...) The tight bass response, clarity, the big-ness...

Got me half-way to thinking that after less than a week, I might have to name this guitar as my favorite; above my Soloist, above my Jazzmaster. I got the rest of the way toward thinking that by trying out some THUNKing, thick clean palm muted licks. I can be fickle, but I've never liked something so quickly before. Maybe it's the coupling of the bridge/pickup, it's so direct and attack is so quick...

Missing the Strat neck pickup glass, but the bridge plus some knob tweaks seem made for everything.

Re: My name is Trevorus and I'm a Tele-holic

none of my teles have a tele neck pup, i dont care for them much. a strat pup, jag pup, mini humbucker or firebird pup works great

I seem to be one as well...

I've got even more Strat's so does that make me a Strat-o-halic as well?

Jezz, add on my Offsets, L.P.'s, Exc. & I've got a major problem!!! I don't think a 12 step program is going to cut it for me? I'm going to need one that has at least 14 steps to ever have a chance! LOL, perhaps even some "Metronome Methadone".....

Re: My name is Trevorus and I'm a Tele-holic

Only have 2 right now, but I've had my eye on a 72 Deluxe RI, the solid body though the thinline is cool too.

Re: My name is Trevorus and I'm a Tele-holic

For years I never liked them. I guess I needed to mature as a player to appreciate them. I've had a few. One of my favs was a MIJ Contemporary from the mid-80's. Sweet guitar but I couldn't stand the bridge on it (it was that Fender system 1 trem and I blocked it down). Eventually sold it to a guy who had the matching Strat. Had a MIA from 1991 that was wonderful but the neck profile messed with my fret hand. Had to move it. It was too good to swap the neck on. Had a MIM back in the 90's too that was OK. Sold it.

Now I have parts-a-tele, really an Esquire. Mighty Mite Butterscotch Blonde body, Warmoth neck with boatneck contour and Strat headstock. Wilkinson bridge with compensated saddles, Rumpelstiltskin Black Rope overwound pickup, wired with the Eldred mod. It's a beast and covers a lot of ground.

Re: My name is Trevorus and I'm a Tele-holic

too dang heavy for me, look awesome though!

Re: My name is Trevorus and I'm a Tele-holic

Some sweet Tele's in this thread. My 2-cents worth: If you're going to have a Tele, you need at least one with a Jerry Donahue bridge. To my ears, it's the quintessential "Tele" sound, but staying "smooth". I tried two Antiquity's before settling on the JD. It's that good.

Re: My name is Trevorus and I'm a Tele-holic

Tone4days, have any pix of your neck mounting job??

Artie,
First time I got a Vintage modded tele, I did the JD pup in the bridge.. Yeah, it was a killer! I was going to go the same route when I got one again recently, but I decided to gets some pups from Zhang for it instead. They are awesome too!

Re: My name is Trevorus and I'm a Tele-holic

Yup. I've got a Zhang in one of my Strats. Killer pup. Dave's got the "touch".

Re: My name is Trevorus and I'm a Tele-holic

Got a Bunyan and a Waylon in my bridge and neck and a Dim Satchurator in the middle.. The guitar sounds ALL kinds of good!! Not usually a fan of most Dimarzios Ive tried, so I dont know if the Satchurator is just a really good pickup, (curious to try one in the neck pos) but in the middle of that tele, it sings

Matter of fact.. Got me thinking bout it.. next time I make the trek to Jax, Im gonna have to get it out of storage and show it some love.. Gotta get my Squier strat out and shim the neck on her and adjust the pups. Had those all dialed in, but since I lowered the saddles, Im sure itll need tweaked. Dang it!

Re: My name is Trevorus and I'm a Tele-holic

i'll take some pics next time its apart ... was too focused on the job (and wouldve needed extra hands) to remember to take some during the mod

just got back from recording with the tele clone

really like the change ... much louder and full bodied ... straight into the amp, it seemed to have a bit more chime/swirl on open position chords than i remember ... also, i think it either rolled the highs down some or just changed the relative balance by enhancing the lows and low mids .... i needed to actually add highs on the amp ... once they were back in , it was all tele! ... i am gonna see about tweaking the bridge pickup height too - maybe lower it a touch on the bass side ... one thing i need to experiment with it to drop the bridge pickup a little on the treble side to see if it decreases string pull - i'l love a touch more sustain/ring out if possible

man, teles are just so friggin cool as greasy gritty rock and roll rhythm machines ... and, thru a Blues Jrs, record like a dream

Re: My name is Trevorus and I'm a Tele-holic

Ok, so I ended up putting a new harness in my Squier Tele. A 62 Tele bridge pickup, and a 51 Nocaster neck. Holy cap, it's tasty.
