My new favorite picks

I got one for free in a pack of Dunlop strings. The strings are long gone, but I've bought a bunch more of the picks. The Ultex seems to give a bit more zing to the attack, and the sharp tip is super versatile... I love how precise I can get. It seems like all the Ultex picks feel about the same no matter the thickness, and the 1.0 feels as good as any. (I typically use Tortex .73, .88 and 1.0 depending on my mood)

If you aren't a Blue Chip, V-Picks, Gravity Picks, or Red Bear user, give one a go.

Re: My new favorite picks

I switched from .71 Gators to .73 Ultex a year or two ago. I love them they don't wear out nearly as fast

Re: My new favorite picks

I find that many of those picks have smaller profile that I do not like than the traditional nylon like the 1 mm I have used forever. The really small Dunlops, forget what they are called ( jazz?)_ I do not get why people like them, IMO they are horrible and way to small ( maybe for shred sweep picking w/ ultralight strings?) .The Ultex and Tortex < I like the feel, but they are also too small IMO.

Great picks... I switch pretty interchangeably between those and the Tortex (.73 for both).

I use exactly the same as you and love them both, seems like the ultex darkens and thickens the tone a little. I always have both ready depending on what guitar I'm using.

I'm guilty. (Dunlop Jazz lll max grip/d'Addario 8-38's in Eb)

Re: My new favorite picks

I've used the jazz III... it has it's charm. My daughter likes them. I use the 3.0 Big Stubbies myself.

Re: My new favorite picks

I love the Dunlop Ultex Jazz III 2.0's. For acoustic, I've switched to the Ultex .73 sharps

I use celluloid picks (.81 Fire Stone) exactly because they smooth out that zing. I find it really annoying...

Re: My new favorite picks

I like the tip of the Jazz III, but it's just too small for me. I'm so used to the standard shape from 20 years of Tortex and Fender, but the sharp tip and material change is a cool change.

Re: My new favorite picks

I always sand my picks to smooth the edges from the molding process. Seems the Jazz picks always have that center mold line around the perimeter and it annoys the ****skis out of me.

Re: My new favorite picks

So funny, I just switched from Jazz iii Tortex and Carbon to Ultex. Smooth like glass, no rough edges, glides across strings.

Re: My new favorite picks

i like the .90 sharp or .88 normal ultex. i wear the tips down eventually but still like the feel

Re: My new favorite picks

I got a couple of the Ultex Sharps in 1.14 mm I think. Little brighter than their standard 351 shape. Like 'em. I'll still use the same gauge Tortex or Gators.

But lately I've been digging the "Red Rocker" V-Pick. This is a great entry into the world of V-Picks. Feels like a standard 351, but very stiff and controllable. Very grippy. I also like many of their thicker picks. Some have a very bright tone; the "Screamer/Acoustic" is great for adding attack and presence to a rosewood dread. Haven't worn one down yet. Fast over the strings.

The OTHER cool pick in my pocket is an agate pick from Mike Stone at Stoneworks Guitar Picks. They sell their "plain janes" for about $12, but the fancier agates, meteorite, turqoise, et. al. can be over $100. They are highly polished and very fast across the strings. Stiff as a rock (pun), and they wear like iron. (Pun #2.) Expensive yes, but exquisitely beautiful, just little works of art. AND...they sound good! He can do them as a necklace for your main squeeze; I've bought a couple for Miss Leslie. Thicknesses can vary but if you like a stiff pick, give them a try.

Re: My new favorite picks

My relatively new favorite pick is the Gravity Razer 2.0 Chapman. Great articulate picking definition with its beveled edge, and an unpolished finish for better grip. For quite some time, I've been using Ultex 1.14 triangle picks. They're great, but these Gravity picks took it up a notch. My lead playing has become slightly, but noticeably, more on point... more crisp, if that makes any sense.
