My Orange OR15 head just crapped out. Need help

Re: My Orange OR15 head just crapped out. Need help

I felt the Mullards were best for my tastes. Alot of people like JJs..they are darker and have more lows, but I find them flat/2dimensional. Also the TAD and aTung-Sols are popular.

Re: My Orange OR15 head just crapped out. Need help

Tubedepot.com has good prices, and its worth a little extra for the 24 hour burn-in..

Re: My Orange OR15 head just crapped out. Need help

Thanks! I'll buy a couple sets and play around

JeffB-did you have any similar issues with this head?

Re: My Orange OR15 head just crapped out. Need help

I had a jj fry in it...ive had them fry in my class5 and my tm18 too. IME, they are not terribly reliable tubes..But I play loud and put alot of hours on them. They get pushed hard.

Those mullards have had a healthy amount of hours on them too..I would start there. Its a tube amp, tubes go south. Is this your first tube amp?

Word

Not my first tube by a long shot. Just first time I've had one croak on me. I very likely don't put the same hours on it that you do

Re: My Orange OR15 head just crapped out. Need help

Input jacks/solder joints can often be a problem on modern amps.

You should be able to plug your guitar into some sort of boost pedal or overdrive pedal and send that right into the effects return jack. If you get sound out of it, then your power amp section should be good. Jumpering the effects loop can tell you if those connections are good or bad.

These simple tests are cheaper than buying a new set of tubes and should only take a few minutes to do.

Re: My Orange OR15 head just crapped out. Need help

Do you have a multimeter that can check DC resistance? If so, check the ratio of copper windings between the red+brown wires, black+brown wires (primary/tapped primary section), and the yellow+black wires, and the orange+black wires (secondary/tapped secondary section) of the output transformer. If your readings are way off, then you have a shorted output transformer. If your output transformer is gone, then the amp is done - it'd cost the value of the amp to fix it.

You do not need anything connected to test this - in fact, don't have anything connected or turned on to test this. If the amp has been off/not plugged in for a few days the filter caps would normally be drained, but still be careful in case they aren't. Just don't touch anything other than the multimeter test prongs to the OT wires and you'll be fine.

Thanks! I did this. Still nothing. Got new tubes coming. See if that does it.

Re: My Orange OR15 head just crapped out. Need help

New EL84's didn't do it. Bumskis. I'll just let someone qualified look at it. I got more money than time at this point with 2 kids at home under 3 years old. :)

Re: My Orange OR15 head just crapped out. Need help

That stinks. Did you try the fuse and preamp tubes?

Re: My Orange OR15 head just crapped out. Need help

I pulled the fuse and it looked ok. Then again, did I really know what to look for? haha not really. I'm almost wondering if I put it back in correctly as it was kind of having trouble getting seated in there.

I looked at the preamp tubes but didn't pull any. I could switch them around to try and find a bad one but I think I'm ready to just drop it in someone else's lap at this point. My local shop is pretty great and wont' screw me on it.

Re: My Orange OR15 head just crapped out. Need help

When my Tubemeister 18 fried one of its original el84s, it took out the fuse. I replaced the tubes and had the same issue..lights up no sound. The fuse looked ok , but I pulled it and could see it was just barely brown/fried. So worth trying another as well.as.the preamp tubes. Easy and cheap to try. But I get it, if it's easier to take it to a tech, go for it.

Re: My Orange OR15 head just crapped out. Need help

update for myself mostly

took it to local shop. fuse was popped. threw another one in........popped again. and then again.

Going to try new pre-amp tubes and hope that's it

Re: My Orange OR15 head just crapped out. Need help

Hope they get it figured out for you. I'd be quite bummed if I were without mine for any length of time.

Not sure if this was suggested above, but there's some pretty smart lads on the Orange forum that may be able to help out if needed.

Re: My Orange OR15 head just crapped out. Need help

My replacement preamp tubes were sent to Maryland somehow.

I'm in California.

Classic.

And...............we wait

Re: My Orange OR15 head just crapped out. Need help

bought a whole new set of tubes, preamp & power. New fuses. Still no sound at all. Nothing.

Local shop is checking it out but it's not looking good. He checked the caps and most everything else already and it looked ok. Might be something big. Bummer

Re: My Orange OR15 head just crapped out. Need help

Man I am really sorry to hear that. I never had a lick of trouble with it.

Re: My Orange OR15 head just crapped out. Need help

no sweat man. stuff happens. hopefully it's something really dumb we're overlooking

Re: My Orange OR15 head just crapped out. Need help

Does it power on at all? Did it blow fuses when powered on with no tubes installed?

Keep us posted. These threads are always fun to watch...

Re: My Orange OR15 head just crapped out. Need help

It powers on. Tubes glow. Jewel comes on. Popped HT fuse over and over.
