My proposed wiring on/off/on north/humbuck/south

All,

After viewing the wiring diagrams found here, I decided that I wanted to split my coils together in a north/humbuck/south kind of switching arrangement. With my best Gimp, I edited this to show how I wanted to wire my guitar. Please tell me if this looks correct:

Yeppurs . . . that is correct. That will give you inside coils, or outside coils. Also, one simple mod you can make, reverse the outside two lugs, (top and bottom), on the right side of the switch. That will give you stud coil of one with adj. coil of the other, and vice-versa. Keeps both positions humbucking.

Actually, I wanted norths and souths together. I actually didn't want humbucking at all, so that it was more obviously single coil when split. Running them the way you said would be more like a Fender Duosonic, or a Strat in switch positions 2 and 4. But thanks for taking the time to look at it!

Is there any way to wire a switch like this so that one of the "on" positions of the switch is the humbucker mode. I wanted to do something like this but I wanted the down position, as I am holding the guitar, to be the humbucker position so the positions would be humbucker/inside coils/outside coils.

I played with it and researched, but couldn't come up with anything. I was even willing to use a 3PDT or a 4PDT switch, but still came up with nothing.

Also, I had read that if the coils were too far apart, the humbucking effect would be lost, so choosing the stud and adjustable coils together may not be humbucking after all. I can't argue the point because I have no experience. From your experience, is the benefit full humbucking, or is there some sort of partial effect as the distance increases? Just curios.

Yes---there is a way to do it with a 3-way mini-toggle, but it has to be on/on/on.

Connect the top-left and top-right lugs together.

Connect the middle-left lug to the top-left lug (so there will three of them connected together)

Connect the RED & WHITE wires together to the middle-right lug.

Connect the bottom-left lug to ground.

Connect the bottom right to hot (same place that your BLACK wire is connected).

Connect GREEN & BARE to ground as always.

I'm using an on/off/on DPDT in this scenario, and using an on/on/on for this isn't really necessary, since the north and south finish lines are already electrically connected. The middle position of this switch is humbucking (normal) mode. I basically got this from the link I started the thread with, it was a single 3-pole switch (on/off/on) for using one pickup in north/humbuck/south. Since both sides of a DPDT switch aren't connected electrically, I am basically putting a single 3-pole on both sides, one per pickup.

Oh, and to add to my first post, If it's both north coils, those should slightly humbuck together since the bridge pickup is "turned", so it will sound, when split and using both pickups (3-way selector to middle) like I'm using either a Fender Stratocaster in position 2 or 4 on the 5-way selector, or a Fender Duosonic in middle position. Hope this helps without being too long a reply.

Scott - That is PERFECT!!!! That was EXACTLY what I was looking for!!

In case anyone is interested, here are a few pics with a couple of variations on the wiring. I'm planning to put this before the 5-way Superswitch to add a couple of extra positions.

I've only done this with one guitar. I had individual switches so that I could select any coil, at any time. The problem was, I wasn't getting any noise to begin with. (I don't play live.) So I'm not sure of which combo's would, or wouldn't be humbucking. Sorry.
