my SH-6 still makes a lot of feedback

Seymour duncan says its wax-potted by default. i manually wax-potted it too(well the wax wasnt boiling i remember but the temp was high enough so i dont know if i have done it right)
but still it makes alot of feedback when i turn the volume of my amp a lil past 9am while its gain is on max (my amp is vox lil night train...so its max gain is almost nothing comparing to modern amps)
when i stay further from the amp i can increase the gain more but still not that much really. maybe till noon. and the guitar is directly plugged into amp.

does it need re-waxing but this time by a pro? or its the thing that can happen with any rig?

What distance from the strings do you setup your Duncan Distortion at?

Is the feedback uncontrollable? I mean, I can get feedback with my little 5-watt Randall and my guitars, but it's not like it won't stop when I want it to.

Hi! Make sure all ancillary components are tightened down on the guitar including mounting rings, the control cavity plate, pickguard, etc. If you are using mounting springs, you may want to try using surgical tubing instead and also consider adding some dense foam beneath the pickup. Sheer vibration throughout the instrument with a high output pickup under gain can exacerbate certain frequencies causing feedback.

i set pickup 1/16 further from string while pressing last fret on both E's. it becomes uncontrollable as i turn the gain knob on my awp up with volume on max.

my control cavity plate is broken and im not using it right now on my guitar. so ive just covered all wires with tape. isnt it enough?

Does the pickup squeal with other amps?

Does the pickup squeal with clean tone? Does the pickup squeal when pluggwd directly into the amp? (No pedals.)

Check your amp for microphonic tubes. Sometimes if you replace the v1 preamp tube in your amp with a tube known to be good that can solve the problem. Rarely a power tube can also be microphonic.

not with clean tone. yea its squeals when directly plugged into amp. u heard my clip?

Re: my SH-6 still makes a lot of feedback

Any pickup can squeal, even one that is potted. The SH-6 is certainly potted by default. But hitting the input of an amp with too much signal will cause squealing feedback in any pickup. Lower the pickup, and check the gain staging into the amp.

no! my amp is a lil night train and im playing in my bedroom.

Then I might consider things less mechanical (like springs vs rubber tubing) and more about the signal path (quality of pots, cables, tubes) and gain level for starters. Then work out from there to eliminate variables. Also consider swapping out with a different pup to see if there are similar issues.

Do you have a metal cover on the pickup? Covers can cause squealing.
Any part of the pickup that can vibrate will squeal. It has nothing to do with how far it is from the strings, etc. also if it's wobbly with how it's mounted.

But really you are probably just using too much gain and standing too close to the amp. Playing with less gain is always a good idea. Using a lot of gain covers up sloppy technique.

And never heat up wax directly on a stove or to the point of boiling! You can start a fire and melt your pickup bobbins.
