My Splawn cab now has a head...(obligatory pics)

Well, after a design mixup they still didn't get it right the second time but I guess I'll just go with it. I wanted white piping to better match the cab but they did it in gold.

Splawn Competition. 50 watt single channel EL34's. Effects loop, footswitch for gear mode, OD and solo volume boost. It has 3 gears (voices) and each gear also has an overdrive. The Competiton is unique among the models in that because it doesn't have a clean channel, Scott Splawn gave it mode switching by footswitch. You can go from 1st gear to 2nd or 2nd to 3rd. 1st is hot-rodded Plexi, 2nd is JCM 800 and 3rd is super hot JCM 800.

My favorite is 1st gear - it's very clear and has a nice soft low end and sparkly top. Switching into 2nd gear the bottom end actually tightens up and becomes more pronounced and the tone becomes more compressed. You can really tell the difference switching back and forth, it isn't just more gain with the same voice.

Very responsive. I'm getting these killer vowel wah-like tones from my Hamer with the guitar's tone control rolled back that I never experienced with my prior amp. I guess the best way to describe it is to say that it feels like a 'professional's' amp as opposed to what I've owned in the past.

Two of the pics are blurry but the camera's battery went dead before I could reshoot

sweet! but the real question, how much?

Re: My Splawn cab now has a head...(obligatory pics)

Excellent, Steve!

edit: Seeing the guitar and gear together puts the design of the "oversized" 2x12 in a truly positive perspective...larger than I had imagined.

I like the "three speed" idea. More gain, rather than some gawdy booster/driver function that just flubs the tone with a volume/boost jump.

What speakers did you get in the cab? (sorry, if it is on the website).

KICK ASS!

That looks like qaulity all the way. Killer head and the cab is a very impressive looking beast. Rock on!!

You're gonna replace the chicken-head knobs on it though, right...? :D

Thanks Ray. I ordered it with Eminences but I've got a Hellatone 30, which is an aged G12H30, and a Greenback on the way.

:6: There was a mixup with the head design. I originally ordered Plexi style with chicken head knobs after being told they're easier to see in a dark room. But after I ordered the cab I changed the design to white piping and the gold mesh grill with Marshall knobs. I received the head in the original style - they forgot to add the changes into the computer where they work off of.

I called Splawn and Scott asked if it would be all right if they sent me a front panel with the revised design and that I could just keep the first one. I told him I could live with the chicken head knobs. They got the grill right but the piping wrong.

Chicken head knobs rule!

Looks awesome, but I have to ask... are you going to eventually get the headcase with white piping? They could just make you one and send it out when it's done, you return that one, you know? It's kind of obsurd to pay that much money for a product and not get it exactly how you ordered it.

Congrats on the Splawn. What tubes did you go with?

From all of the clips that I hear, they sound great. How about posting up some clips of that bad boy?

Re: My Splawn cab now has a head...(obligatory pics)

Congrats on the head...Scott builds awsome stuff. If you need me to run by and pick up some new piping for you, just holler. His shop is only a few minutes away from me.

Awesome looking amp! That type of setup is really the best, because you get all the tight tone of a closed back, and it's compact enough to never look like overkill. Plus, you still have all that volume, if you need it. It's definitely a professional rig. Once you have it all dialed in with a few pedals, you'll be able to get anything you want out of it.

I'm curious to hear about the Greenback/H30 setup. My Bogner 2-12 has always had the 2 Vin 30's, and I've never heard it with anything else.

Socal, you know my thoughts :D

It's been tormenting me for days, but I've been so swamped that I haven't had time to really sit down and think it through.

Congrats, buddy. Sweet.

Chickenheads rule, because they are wicked, period.

Yeah, I'd leave the black chicken head knobs. It's not a Marshall, so it should have knobs that set it apart. I wouldn't even change the piping, because it matches the piping on the top of the head. It doesn't need to match the cab. I like it the way it is.

very nice,
chicken head knobs are good for the dark
