My Super Reverb *IS* (electronically) a blackface!

So I was doing some research on Super Reverb's and the circuits to see how different my amp was from the Blackface amplifiers. So I started looking at circuit numbers and I noticed that the AB763 circuit was shared by Blackface and early Silverfaces. So I decide to take a look at the tube chart to see what mine is. The top half of the chart is missing, but you can see the bottom half of the letters that say Model "SUPER-REVERB-AMP. AB763" So I guess technically my amp is already blackfaced :) All I gotta do is get the cosmetics changed. I love little surprises like that!

I don't know how it is in Super Reverbs, but in Bassman amps you can't always go by the tube chart. You have to open her up and compare it to the various layouts to see what you have. I have yet to open mine up as I keep plugging it in and playing it on the bass channel. Man it sounds great there. I love cranking that channel and wailing on the compressed 6L6 tubes with a strat neck pickup.

Yeah, my Bassman was made in January '65 and indicates circuit "AA864" on the tube chart..But once opened, I soon realized it's the very rare transition AA165 circuit, supposedly only made for the first few weeks of 1965 before switching over to circuit AB165 for the next few years..

Re: My Super Reverb *IS* (electronically) a blackface!

i have an AA763 transitional bandmaster. According to the stock capacitors it was made in the 3rd week of october 1963. So it looks like a blonde, but is actually a blackface, and whatever...it sounds MARVELOUS!!!

All blackface bandmasters are supposed to be AB763 from 1963-1967

Re: My Super Reverb *IS* (electronically) a blackface!

well another oddity about mine is, that it's got a blackface grillcloth as opposed to the normal silverface grill cloth..can't figure that one out

Re: My Super Reverb *IS* (electronically) a blackface!

i wouldn't care about the outfit. i'd really like some amp with an AB763 circuit.
does anybody know if the new fender amps such as the FENDER VIBROLUX REVERB CUSTOM
do have the same circuit?

you maybe interested in the following article, which shows several infos
regarding fender amps ... serials, names, circuit numbers, speakers, ...
enjoy

/edit. forgot the link :)

Ok so I followed this article and I popped open my amplifier to look for ceramic power resistors connected to the grounds as this article says would be there if it was a silverface circuit (the lack thereof would indicate a blackface) and my amp does in fact *NOT* have them therefore it is the AB763 Circuit, which makes me quite happy :)

Glad to hear it mang. We were trying to be helpful to make sure you indeed had what you thought you had. I don't know what I have yet as I haven't had the time and inclination to open it up. Friends and family keep pulling at me due to my travel schedule and I rarely am home to see them, so I end up visiting and keeping people in the loop on my life and I rarely get to do the things I want to do like this. I hardly get to play as it is.

that amp specifically does not, it isnt a reissue but a newer version. not a bad amp but not an old design.

the fender reissues are pretty close to the old stuff but with corners cut for cost reasons i assume and consumer grade electronics are kinda crappy which doesnt help any
