Its funny, how many posts have the word "wow" in them. :laugh2:

I'll just add my post to the list . . . Wow!

11 wows so far including this one

Looks pretty amazing, although I'm not crazy about the volute but I haven't played a guitar like that so really I can't say anything about it.

But it looks like a world class instrument

a word about the volute

most people's concern is that it interferes somehow with playing
i assure you that not only is it out of the way, but its a comfy place to rest your thumb, or rock you hand against for some extra support

it also serves 2 functions
not only does it reenforce the neck at its most fragile place (see many gibson broken headstocks)
i have reduced the neck angle slightly (still great sustain, but more stability) and added the volute
the old martins and other manufacturers do this, but most don't because it has to be done by hand

secondly, it adds mass and stiffness to the neck which is why my guitars are able to get that really gritty distortion sound, yet still maintin more clarity and string definition

Cheers guys

Cool Cool ... I've seen it on some luthiers work probably due to the reasons you mention about doing it by hand.

I'm no fan of scarf joints period but if it's still comfortable that's the main thing

Re: My Tele is complete! (LOTS OF PICS)

I thought "volute" was an album by Sean Lennon. :smack:

Could someone elaborate for me? Thanks.

Re: My Tele is complete! (LOTS OF PICS)

The Volute is the v-shaped part right underneath the headstock.

It helps reinforce the scarf joint at the neck IMO by providing added mass and surface for the joint (which is the Chilies Heel *Muhahaha yeah I know*) although there's probably other reasons for it as well (as Blueline Noted).

Granted as I'm a wood worker and not a professional luthier I could be talking out my ass

Blueline, funny how posted so soon.
- Those pics do it better justice by far. Looking at the original one it looked more bulky and fairly big

Man, people gotta stop posting all these porno picks ;) I'm starting to get GAS for a tele now :)

Re: My Tele is complete! (LOTS OF PICS)

TheProphet is correct, there is another reason why the headstock angle is a weakness. the wood there is cause shortgrain, as all the neck wood runs straight to the headstock and the angle of thea headstock creates short grain which is weaker. Some manufacturers use a scarfe joint, wehre the headstock is actually straight grain but glued onto the neck at a angle- this is a good technique (warmoth uses it on their angle pegheads, but i don't like the look of the joint
especially cause my nekcs are all oil finished
and you can see it htrough the oil - which bothers me

Cheers

Aaron,
this is meant as constructive criticism, as I admire your work and craftsmanship

since it was brought up, I feel the line of the volute could be improved ... I'm sure that the structural aspect is of primary importance, but I feel if you drew designs for a volute on paper, they would look different

maybe I'm used to the volute on my D-28

take what I say with a grain of salt, though ... it's a minor point for such a nice ax

Re: My Tele is complete! (LOTS OF PICS)

Actually Blue I'm curious as to your contruction of the Neck ... are not using a Sarf Joint? I couldn't figure out if you're using that method or not

Just for reference I did up a pic

This is just for clarification

The Top being something I haven't seen

The second being a Scarf

Third being IMO the most stable I forget what you'd call it but it's a multi-laminate design

Re: My Tele is complete! (LOTS OF PICS)

Shoot I reread your post and it sounds like you're using a one piece construction running from the base of the neck to the headstock.

If that's the case never mind, I understand

Re: My Tele is complete! (LOTS OF PICS)

The volute really is nothing you notice when you're playing. It seems to perfectly fit the contour of my thumb when I'm playing an F power chord or something similar.. never obstructive in any way.

Re: My Tele is complete! (LOTS OF PICS)

that has looked better with every pic i have seen. I am glad you enjoy it alex and as always Aaron you do fantastic work.
