My Texas Hot Review

Guitar Toad

Toadily Stratologist
I finally bought a RW/RP middle Texas Hot and the Texas Hot Custom Bridge to make a full set of TH’s in my strat.

Let me just say that I’m not worthy. These are terrific pickups. I am experiencing what I have heard other guys describe: evenly voiced true single coil pickups. They are warm with just the right brightness. I get bluesy neck tones, sweet notch tones, and beefy strat tones from the bridge. The bridge is beefy but still sounds like a strat. Notes from the upper frets come off round and big and melodic.

As I was ordering the Custom Bridge I was worried that it was going to be too hot. I wanted to have the best of both worlds hot tones and still hold on to the vintage vibe. The good news is that it’s not too hot. I am no expert, but is this the perfect strat pickup? It still sounds straty and strong and solid, not thin weak or ice-picky.

Earlier in the week I had posted in Bluedave’s Texas Hot Thread, that I was concerned that these pickups weren’t bright enough for me. I removed the one NOS RFT 12AX7 tube and replaced that one with an EH equivalent. Now, it sounds great. I get bright and chimey tones without it being too glassy or too bright.

AAAh! So, this is what a professional quality guitar sounds like. I love it. I now have a strat that even a tele lover/player like Flank would enjoy playing. :laugh2:

Lew, and Christian (The Guy Who Invented Fire) thanks for your great recommendations. You were right on!

Re: My Texas Hot Review

Thanks! Glad to help. I use the Texas Hot Custom bridge pickup in a couple of my Strats and it's my favorite Strat bridge pickup. Glad you're loving it too! I don't remember if you ordered a baseplate for it or not? Did you? Lew

Re: My Texas Hot Review

I did order the baseplate. But, I didn't put it on yet. I wanted to get to know this pup without the baseplate first.

Re: My Texas Hot Review

Glad you liked them Todd...to be honest I don't use a THCB, I had one and sold it because I felt that it was too hot for what I was looking for, but thats the beautiful part about all this stuff...we can all have different answers and we can all still be right!

Re: My Texas Hot Review

BTW, I also installed a mint green pickguard along with the pickups. If you care to see larger pics than my avatar You can look here or simply check out my profile pic. ;) If anyone cares :dunno:

Awesome to hear. Those guys know their stuff, so I'm glad you took their advice. I'd have been shocked if you were anything less than blown away.

Re: My Texas Hot Review

Glad you like the pickups....I like them alot and I use and much prefer the Surfers in the neck and middle and either the Texas Hot Custom or the TB in the bridge....I do have 1 guitar loaded with just Texas Hots though...

Re: My Texas Hot Review

I would really like to try the Surfers. Maybe my next strat will get a Surfer Set.

Re: My Texas Hot Review

I have a Texas Hot Custom that I bought on sale at a Guitar Center for $25! I've had it for years and have never put it in a guitar! My Strats have been in pieces for a while now and I really need to get them painted, buy new pickguards, and put new pickups in them. I've really been concentrating on getting my humbucker guitars up to speed first though.

My first set of strat antiquities was the Texas Hots that Lew sold me...I then took Lew's suggestions further and went with the Surfers...I didn't care for the Surfer bridge pickup, but the Surfer neck and middle hands down are my favorite pickups!
