My two favorite Gibson P90 tones...

Re: My two favorite Gibson P90 tones...

“Mississippi Queen” is tough to beat for sure. Are the rhythm and lead tones from the same setup? Seems unlikely he’d have a boost pedal at the time, and they both sound pretty amp-y.

Re: My two favorite Gibson P90 tones...

Little Charlie Baty has a pretty badass P-90 tone out of his ES-295, on record it is good, live it is insane. The 295 into a Super Reverb spitting blood, damn....

Re: My two favorite Gibson P90 tones...

That Mississippi Queen tone is beastly. I dig it.

Re: The Mississippi Queen tone...

Wish that tone could be had from a P90 in a humbucker size.

It might be possible. James at Rewind Electric winds his buckhummers (p90 humbucker pickup) the same as his p90s. The bobbins are altered to fit a humbucker cover (plastic). I believe Gilmour's goldtop is a '55 from the video you posted. FWIW, I've owned a couple of early-mid 50s p90s and they're my favorite. James' p90s are 95-99% there. Very subtle differences. They're close enough that I would not bother to pay the premium for a vintage p90. I will be buying directly from him in the future. I would definitely contact him if you're looking for that tone out of a p90/*humbucker sized p90.

If I remember correctly, Pete also played though a Colosseum head, at least for a time.

I have always adored the tones of Leslie and Pete which were both iconic P-90 tones...my most favorite tone of all time!

I will never forget when a friend came over to jam with me back in 1969 or 1970 I believe, and he brought over his Colosseum for me to try out (he played through my Bandmaster with 4x JBL D130s). I had a Ric 330 at the time (not P-90s but still a great tone). That tone, 330 thru that Sunn, was sooo amazing that I felt vibrations penetrating my entire body and, believe it or not, I actually climaxed! Never has a tone had such a profound affect...it WAS the Mississippi Queen signature tone. Since then I have never been able to duplicate it and I attribute that the the Sunn amp.

Re: My two favorite Gibson P90 tones...

for the Mississippi Queen tone, you need an LP Jr with a slightly hotter pickup and alnico 2 magnets. direct mounted. For the Gilmour sound here shown, you need a slightly underwound pickup with a3's or even a4's... can be done in one guitar with a bit of tweaking. either the Mississippi tone will be a bit brighter and less chewy if you put it in a standard LP or the Gilmour sound will be a bit more honky with a stronger midrange if put in an LP Jr/Special.

Re: My two favorite Gibson P90 tones...

Isn't the lead guitar from Mott The Hoople's "All The Way To Memphis" a P90 as well?

Get the "real" P-90 tone...get alnico mags. If you want more output and mids replace one of the A5s for an A8. Heck, I've even used two A8s in a bridge P-90. Got me some great tone, higher output, and no shrill ear piercing brittle highs that are unavoidable with ceramics (esp in a P-90). Have you ever heard the difference between Strat pups with ceramic vs alnico mags?

Absolutely my fave ceramic mag pickup

I used it for years, first in my Junior then in my old Special. It is pretty hot and slightly compressed but righteous mids.

Peavey Raptor ceramic SC I have in bridge of partscaster really defies this. It's bland in cleans, but gets wonderful grunt with gain. No icepick whatsoever despite only 6,5k DCR.
