N.G.D., Gotta Love Yard Sales!!!

So it's actually been unseasonably warm here recently! Along with the warm weather we've had some Yard Sales pop up. I was driving by one today and I saw a Fender hard case sitting on the lawn so I decided I'd stop. I recently had to give the hard case that held my Tele up for my MIA Stratocaster so I've been in the market for something else that could hold it.

I walked up and asked "how much for the case?" The guy said $50, I hit him back with $40 & he agreed! So I walked over to pick it up and it feels a bit heavy??? I didn't just buy a case, there was a almost brand new guitar sitting inside of it!!!

So I realize it's nothing too special but the thing play's & sounds just as good as my MIA Fenders & it's super light & comfortable!!! I'm probably going to be modding the hell out of this one eventually but even as it sits I would have spent upward of $200 for it & the case! She's got great action, no fret buzz, string rattle, fret wear, Ect. & I'm really kinda digging the natural oil finish!!!

Yamaha's have always impressed me with their build quality considering the price tags that are normally associated with them & this one is no different! I have played these before & they were nice enough. I don't know if Pacifica's have just come a long way since the 90's or if this was one of the diamonds in the rough? Regardless, I'm pretty darn happy with myself & very happy that I bothered to stop!!!

For $40, that's a steal. Grats. A buddy of mine has one. I put an X2N in the bridge for him. I'll let you imagine how it sounds.

Agree, I think Yamaha guitars are totally underrated. Yamaha's tradition in building high quality musical instruments goes back a long way and I am certain that there is a big pride factor in everything they build. Tangentially I think their influence is already being seen at Line 6.

Line 6 has said repeatedly that they wouldn't have been able to release the Helix had Yamaha not gotten involved and really helped with the R&D.

Or an Invader.

That is a true steal, congrats! Old Pacificas are super solid guitars. If anything, the newer cheapo ones are more hit-or-miss. But, of course, higher end Yamahas are excellent.

I used to have an old T-style Pacifica and miss it a bit. It was sort of the T-style counterpart to your guitar.

The disadvantage of your guitar is that every pickup you swap into it will cost more than the guitar itself, heh.

Re: N.G.D., Gotta Love Yard Sales!!!

I bought a S/S/S guard for it last night so I think I'll start out with a Twangbanger in the bridge and some APS-2's in the neck & middle slots & 7 way switching.. I don't know that I'm going to be keeping it that way, I just have the pickups to do it already, or will have them, by the time the guard gets here???

You know, the stock pickups really aren't as bad as you'd expect. The bridge humbucker is a touch muddy but it's ballsy! The muddiness could have something to do with the fact that I haven't E.Q.'d my amp since playing my L.P. through it yesterday? The stock singles sound pretty good though!!!

Re: N.G.D., Gotta Love Yard Sales!!!

what a steal man :) :)
yeah my brothers first guitar was a pacifica.....we thought it was terrible - until we played it though our marshall instead of the little amp that came in the yamaha package - and yeah i can fully agree they are good guitars... with great action as uve sed OP!

Re: N.G.D., Gotta Love Yard Sales!!!

That was a steal!

Pacs are great guitars. I used to have one 112J from the early 90s that sounded and played great.

The only complain *I* have is that the nut is a bit too narrow for my taste, although I reckon it was designed to perfectly fit the Japanese folk ergonomics, and you could add to that European young boys, girls and women, isn't it?

HTH,

Re: N.G.D., Gotta Love Yard Sales!!!

I had a pacifica for a bit last year
I just couldn't bond with it
It was nice but just not I gotta keep it nice

I got it in a similar deal, when a coworker cleaned out his closet

I swap it and the Ibby acoustic I got from him for a Yamaha APX 500ii

Which I don't have now either.

Re: N.G.D., Gotta Love Yard Sales!!!

I tracked down a couple guards for it today, (figure I'll build two since I've got pickups coming out of my ears) one S/S/S & a H/S/S. I'm going to try a Twangbanger bridge & two APS-2's in the single guard which should be cool? I've had that Twangbanger for a while now and I've never tried it. The H/S/S guard is getting loaded with a Custom Shop TB-16 I've got kicking around & a couple SSL-1's in the neck & middle slots...

It's nice having a S style guitar that I don't mind ripping apart again! My Fender has a 22 fret lipped neck so I have to remove the neck to get at the pickguard, it's not exactly an ideal situation for trying out new guards I've built...

Re: N.G.D., Gotta Love Yard Sales!!!

Love to see this when you are finished with it. What a great find. I wonder if he looked in the case when he put it outside. What a strange thing to not notice a guitar in there....or did he know, and just sold it?

Re: N.G.D., Gotta Love Yard Sales!!!

Did the seller even know there was a guitar in the case? He probably thought he sold you a case for $40. :chairfall

Re: N.G.D., Gotta Love Yard Sales!!!

Tell ya what... I'll give ya $50

Congratulations on the buy...

I haven't played one of those for quite a while, but I do have fond memories of them.
And given that it came for free inside a case, what's not to like?

Damn!

Oh yeah he knew... He had another one (a Vinci I think?) as well & apparently he'd just closed up the cases they were in because it looked like it was going to start spitting rain. The second one was a piece of trash! The action must have been an inch off the board at the 12th fret! As for this Yamaha the more I play it the more I love it, even with the stock pickups!!! Of course I'm not playing it through a cheesy 10W S.S. amp with a puny little 6 in speaker but it's still pretty impressive all things considered.

I'm thinking about dropping in a TB-16 Custom/Hybrid in the bridge and a couple of SSL-1's in the neck and middle slots. Those pickups were originally intended for my American Special Stratocaster but I've already got a pretty great set of singles in that so I'm going to leave it alone...

Anyone have any thoughts on my choice of pickups, I'm open to other suggestions???
