N/OGD: 1991 Gibson MIII Standard

"New/Old Guitar Day" - Some of you may have seen this in another thread but, I just picked up a Modified 1991 Gibson MIII Standard with a clean Original Gibson Hardshell Case with the bright pink lining and shroud built into the case...latches were all intackt and the case is nice and clean. Gutiar arrived yesterday so I took it home, wiped it down, tuned it as the seller had loosened the nut and strings for shipping, and got to plug it in for a half hour. Mini-Toggle is wired for Neck or Bridge...two positions...but I played around with the pickup height and pretty much found what I considered the sweet spot with only a couple turns on each pickup. Super low action and the neck feels nice; more comfortable than I remember the prior ones I've owned being. Jazz/JB TB sounded really nice through the 5150. Looking forward to spending some time playing it tomorrow evening.

Very nice! is it "crackle finish", or do the pics just make it look funny? I dig strange Gibsons like this.
Gibson got no love for those back in the day (at least where I was) If it wasn't a LP/SG/"normal" Gibbos, nobody wanted them... I had a guitar teacher that had a "US-1" that was fantastic- an all mahogany set neck superstrat. He got it from the store the lessons were at, for next to nothing, because they sat on it for, like, 4 or 5 years. If it had said anything BUT Gibson on it, it would have sold immediately, but since it wasn't the traditional Gibson style... it sat.

His was silver with black hardware. Of course I can't find a pic anywhere of one like it...
Also the Victorys were pretty cool, too

Plus for a while they were sticking Explorer necks on EVERYTHING, but of course nobody bought them...

Re: N/OGD: 1991 Gibson MIII Standard

Prior Owner painted Nitro over the body with some..."reliving"...he termed it "Battleworn Black".

I dig the MVX/MVII. Don't like the headstock on the Q Series. Like the Explorer on the Double Cut. One of those popped up on eBay last year. Def some very different designs to bear the "Gibson" Logo.

Re: N/OGD: 1991 Gibson MIII Standard

Set Up the way I like it, relocated upper strap button to the top horn instead of the back of the horn. Really a nice playing and sounding Bastardized MIII.

Nice. Its a shame it doesn't have the string clamp locking gotoh like in the top pic in ''daan'' post.

Re: N/OGD: 1991 Gibson MIII Standard

Nice, I think our Mr Bees as a thing for those. I think it's pretty cool but I'd have to refinish it as too good to leave beat up. Great buy though :-)

Re: N/OGD: 1991 Gibson MIII Standard

The gotoh tremolos on the u2 and wrc models is what i was referring too btw. I know a guy who has two NOS ones for sale. I just dont have the money atm to buy them.

This one of mine has one. Its super

Re: N/OGD: 1991 Gibson MIII Standard

I was wondering on the Gotoh as the New Reissues have a Floyd and Originals have a "Gibson" Schaller Floyd.

I've played this thing pretty much exclusively since I got it in my hands. I've been surprised how much I've taken to it and how well I've liked it; playabililty and sound. I never bonded with the prior 2 Black ones I had for whatever reason. That said, I'm having a CTS/USA 5 Way Strat Style Selector reinstalled. a SD Classic Stack 1NP direct mounted to the body in the Middle Postion between the JNL/TB4L that came in it, and, having the Mini-Toggle returned to a "Split/Full" Mode Switch.

Bet that plays nice after the new pickup and setup. Enjoy. :cool2:

Re: N/OGD: 1991 Gibson MIII Standard

Thanks. I had it set up perfectly to my preference prior to the pickup and switch install and was loving playing it; but the added tonal options are nice to have at my disposal.

Re: N/OGD: 1991 Gibson MIII Standard

Very cool. I remember one of the local shops having some Floyded Gibbies when i was starting out. They obviously didn't get much love.

Well...if it's a Gibson and isn't a LP, SG, V, Explorer or Jazz/Blues Box it certainly seems to face an uphill battle for acceptance. I was surprised the M-III was reissued.

Re: N/OGD: 1991 Gibson MIII Standard

Thanks but I didn't do much with it. Though it is better with more options tonally.

Yours are nice; really like the natural one (had a Natural one once) and is that an OFR on the Red?
