Sold my Splawn Nitro and got a new Randall RM100 currently loaded with Blackface, SL+, and XTC modules. Randall amps are not something I would normally have considered but I ran across this sound clip a couple of weeks ago and it piqued my interest about the potential of an amp like this.

I actually tried an MTS out a couple of years ago but wasn't impressed. Then my friend who is a salesman at a music store had been bugging me about trying out the new ones so a week ago I went in and gave it a shot. I was immediately impressed with all three stock modules; blackface, plexi and xtc. I was so close to getting what I wanted with my Splawn Nitro but not exactly what I wanted until I found this Randall. I went out and bought it the day before yesterday.

I exchanged the plexi module with the SL+ yesterday but I think I made a mistake. I want to exchange it back for the plexi module. It's not because the SL+ isn't awesome, because it is totally awesome, but because the XTC module sounds very similar but has a little more cut.

The difference between the SL+ and XTC is basically that the SL+ is smoother with thicker lower mids. It reminds me of an overdriven plexi at max volume, very warm. The XTC module sounds more like a JCM 800, very warm sounding also. The SL+ is very thick sounding. The XTC is not as thick but in no way thin sounding.

I just want to go back to the plexi module so that I can have a light overdrive channel I can push with a boost, and use my XTC channel for saturated overdrive.

This amp is much better quality than I would have thought. It has really good dynamics for an amp like this. Soft picking is less distorted and quieter and hard picking is louder and more distorted. It feels very natural and sounds alive. So far I'm very satisfied with my RM100. I can't wait to pick up some modded modules and see what kinds of sounds I can get with those.

I recorded the SL+ and XTC modules. These are some songs I just started learning the day before yesterday. I added a little verb in Cubase. It's recorded SL+ rhythm/XTC rhythm then SL+ solo/XTC solo in that order.

What are your thoughts between the two modules?

Songs I'm learning in this sound clip:

Ozzy/Randy - I Don't Know
Queensryche - Empire
Iron Maiden - Stranger in a Strange Land

Re: NAD and Poll

I didn't listen to your clips, I owned an RM100 and liked the XTC module ove the SL+.

My favorite module was the Dan Donegan one, the 1086 I think. It it just a great sounding peice of gear, pretty flexible.

You're right. I should take the clip down because it's not good. Specifically what did you like more about the XTC than the SL+ considering that the difference between them is so subtle?

The XTC module had a cool growl to it that I liked. It was dark and brooding with good attack.
