NAD BOOGIE TIME!

I now own a Boogie .50 cal + head. Still getting acquainted with it but right off can tell you the cleans are fabulous and this thing is LOUD!!! Still working with getting a balance between the clean and crunch and setting tones in particular for the crunch side. It feels a lot different than what I'm used to in particular with the Zinky Velvet. No where near the gain levels that I have on the Zinky and it feels really stiff and hard right now to me but bet it will cut like crazy in the mix and should give me that good chimey clear crunch tone that I have been sorely lacking. Will take some getting used to though as it's no where near as touch sensitive, smooooth fluid and organic feeling as the Zinky is. It's also much LOUDER and also less forgiving than the Zinky is so you better be clean on your technique and that's not a bad thing! So time to get back to work on dialing in this beast and will post live clips as soon as I can get it out on stage.

Nice! A buddy of mine just picked up one of these and though I haven't heard it yet, I bet it's pretty awesome. He got a good deal on it and it's a great format for an amp. Congrats!

Re: NAD BOOGIE TIME!

I know Pepper Keenan got some killer tones with one, so you've got that going for you. Which is nice.

Re: NAD BOOGIE TIME!

I once had the Studio 22 from that same series.

The equaliser sucks tone big-time and is best left bypassed and never used.

Be sure to download the Owners Manuals from the Mesa site; there's a lot of information in there that can help you get the best tones. And don't be afraid to call the Mesa Customer Service line if you have any questions about the amp. These amps have a sweet spot, and once you get in it, it should be very sweet indeed.

I have a DC-3, Mark III, IV, and V amps and I ALWAYS use the Graphic EQ with the LEAD channel, using the auto-switching feature. With the 5-band, you can drop the mids for great crunch tones. You can boost the mids and make a strat as thick as a Paul, or add slice and cut to a mellow guitar. Small movements will make for big differences.

Nice score. Enjoy!

One of the first things I did Bill was download that manual. It answered some questions and while the wife is at work tomorrow I will really work with it some.
I have had a love hate thing going with Boogies for years as I love hearing someone play through one but have never warmed up on how they "feel". This is my 3 rd over the years and this time I'm going to give this a little time and see if i can get the "feel" for these.
Already because I did download and read that manual I have a lot better understanding on how the crunch and clean channels interact and setting that EQ up the crunch channel only through "auto" was one of the biggest pieces I was missing. I am now getting a lot better crunch tones as a result.
Thanks buddy for the help!!

Re: NAD BOOGIE TIME!

I bet a good compressor and clean boost in front of it would put it over the top.

Re: NAD BOOGIE TIME!

Kinda getting this one dialed in finally. Really cool amp and much different than my other amps. Reminds me a lot when you get the front volume up around 8 or so of the old early late 1980's Hot Rod Mod Carvin X100B I had with the way the notes bloom and the harmonic structure. Really cool tone when you get it cranking a little but unfortunately it kills the cleans totally and the rhythm side really sounds ratty set up that way. I was able to dial it in with that 1st volume at just over 6 however and get some great tones using the EQ on auto to tweak just the lead channel and then setting the regular channel up for a nice warm clean with just enough gain to get some "hair" when you really dig in.
Really digging this amp so far now that I am beginning to understand it. Not not as big warm and organic feeling as the Zinky nor does it have as much gain on tap but this tone should really sit nice in a full band mix.
Taking it out this afternoon to set it up for church in the morning and with the set we are doing should be a good test of the rig.
This song in particular should be a good test for her tomorrow>
