i sold one of my ESP's to build a strat, but i changed my mind at the last minute when i realized i had saved enough spare change to get the amp i've REALLY wanted for like 2 years.

i'm excited as fakk.

Re: NAD JSX head

love the jsx. a well balanced clean tone and more gain than I can handle. Nice score!

i got it because the crunch and clean channels are supposed to sound like a classic 50, and the ultra channel is like the crunch channel on a XXX. does that sound about right?

Re: NAD JSX head

sweetness! them things are rad amps.

i dunno about the clean/crunch channel, but the ultra channel is smoother and richer sounding than the XXX IMO...still a lotta gain, but a nicer more musical gain structure than the XXX ultra channel for sure.

Re: NAD JSX head

the jsx more british sounding than the xxx. smoother to my ears. the el34s contribute a lot to this I think.
The clean is not the same chime as a fender twin but not as flubby/round and warm as a lot of brit amps. crunch is sort of like a overdriven marshall but not as much bite/grittiness. I say this cuz I've never played a classic 50.

someone here said they ride the line between mesa/boogie and marshall and I like that description.

Correctomundo.
Nice score! I still have mine after 8 years and many other amps!

Re: NAD JSX head

I've been GASing for one of these for a while, but I can't find any. I might end up getting a Bugera 333XL since it's a clone, but I'm not sure yet.

Re: NAD JSX head

My fave amp in revalver HP! If I was in a band that'd probably be what I'd go for.

Re: NAD JSX head

the first time i wanted one was when i had my vypyr 100 and used the JSX modeler more than the others.

I'm expecting a "It's miles ahead of the Vypyr," but do the tones between the Vypyr's JSX settings and the actual JSX sound similar at all? It's one of the settings I enjoy most on my Vypyr.

Re: NAD JSX head

The red channel on the Vypyr JSX Model sound very close to the how Crunch channel on my XXX did. The Ultra Channel on a JSX is basically the same circuitry as the Crunch channel on a XXX. The differences being stock EL34's in the JSX, and the extra tone shaping controls the JSX has. Fat swithces, resonance, presence, etc. Peavey still sells the JSX, it's just rebranded as the XXX II, And the XXX is now the called 3120.

That being said, the vypyr JSX model is great, it models the gain structure and active EQ quite well. The same can't be said for the vypyr XXX model IMO. It's more marshally, not as modern sounding. The JSX is an awesome amp that's super versatile.

Re: NAD JSX head

The Tube Peavy stuff some times gets little respect. However i have owned several over the years and always got great tones with them. i own a Ultra + head now and love mine.
Played several of those JSX heads and liked what I got from them congrats!

Re: NAD JSX head

Ultra plus is a great amp (nice color changing logo :) ), it was the predecessor to the XXX then the JSX, all similar circuitry. I've always liked peavey stuff, even some of the solid state.

Re: NAD JSX head

It should arrive early next week. I'll know then.

I got it cheap, because the tolex is messed up. So I'm covering it with brown ostrich and replacing the chromey panel with tan weave grillcloth. At the same time I'm building a 212 cab to match.

Should look cool. The chrome panel is strange. It's attached really well to the head shell, and the "S" has a wood backing to it that is also attached separately I think and I've heard it can be a b1+ch to remove. You may be able to just ditch the chrome and go right on top of whatever is left recessed behind it (?). I'm sure you'll be fine.

Maybe look for an amber jewel light too (?) That would look nicer than the red with those colours.
I use the crunch channel mainly now on that amp, which is the "Amber" channel. I put an amber jewel on mine too, and it looks slick. Maybe I'll take a picture of it tonight. I haven't fired that amp up for a few months now.
