NAD: Marshall dsl 100 head

So I had a fender Deville that was not quiet working for me.
The cleans were nice but the dirt channel was horrible. Plus, when you tried to use the bright switch in the clean channel it had a few issues. So me being the kinda lady I am, I searched
Craigslist and found me someone to trade it to. I was upfront about the issue it had with bright switch and the guy said no problem. So we traded out. Landed a Marshall head. I knew it would probably need new tubes but I'm unsure of what to get. I've heard mixed reviews about jj's. Some swear by them others say they aren't reliable. I have someone suggesting ruby tubes . What are you're guys thoughts. For those that have this amp what do you run? IMG_0030.jpgIMG_0033.jpg

Im using tungsol power, tubes had bad luck with EH twice not lasting long. Rubys at GC has good prices and a 6 month warranty

Re: NAD: Marshall dsl 100 head

I've used the Ruby's in my JVM. They worked/sounded great. I've used JJ also....they were ok. A little sterile imo.
Right now in my Quickrod I'm using the Splawn stock power tubes Chinese EL-34B and I'm loving them!

Re: NAD: Marshall dsl 100 head

Great amps.

I'd say -1 to the Ruby's though. JJ's, Svetlana's, EH ... gotta try em to see what works best for you.

Re: NAD: Marshall dsl 100 head

I've heard great things about the svetlana's. A friend of mine is a tech and he suggested those. A little expensive but supposedly well worth it

When you say Svetlana are you referring to the Winged =C=?
Because the current production Svetlana and the Winged =C= are NOT the same tube.

The EL34 in the photo is a current production Russian Tung Sol if I'm looking at it right. These are good tubes with a airy, lively sound. You could just replace like for like and rebias. The white silk screened preamp Marshall branded tubes are usually current Chinese Production, same as TAD, Ruby..ect.... Red silk screened preamp tubes in Marshalls are usually JJ. JJs sound a little darker.

These tubes are getting good reviews in Marshalls and are copies of 60's Mullards:

For EL34s I have had good luck with these, and they are only 15 bucks:

Those are the same basic tube as Ruby, and TAD. Other EL34 alternatives are the EHX 6CA7, and the JJ KT77 for a slightly different sound. It is a matter of taste.

I just googled up those links for reference and the photos, and don't favor one vendor over another.

All ears when it comes to EL34's for a Marshall.

Re: NAD: Marshall dsl 100 head

The tubes currently in there are Shuguang EL-34Bs based on the VLVE-00101 code; they're plentiful and cheap if you like the current tone. The white logo 12AX7 I can see is likely Shuguang as well.

I'm currently running JJ EL-34s in my Jubilees and they're working great for me. A good combination of the EL-34 midrange and brightness, but plenty of bottom end available if you want it. As far as others I've tried, Winged Cs are amazing, but they're getting to be more expensive than I'm willing to pay for. I used to swear by EHs, but I've had and heard of too many reliability issues recently. Tung-Sols have a really cool, almost Fender-y vibe on clean tones, but they were too bright and not fat enough in my mini Jubilee. They might be just the ticket in a 100W amp like the DSL that also has plenty of available bottom-end on tap.

Well for my needs it's gonna be ran as a 50 watt. Just as soon as figure out why it has a slight home in half mode and not in full. Thanks for the links. :)

No, I am referring to the tubes that are Svetlana branded.

I used to be all about the Winged C's but with the price increase since they shut down production, not worth it imo.

Yeah, I have my last set in my JCM 800. Great tubes...I love them. But the cost and quality of what is left makes it not worth it anymore.
I haven't tried the current Svetlana power tubes. I have however tried the preamp....they are a little harsh and brittle to my ears.

Re: NAD: Marshall dsl 100 head

Funny enough my last Winged C's are in an 800 2210 as well.

I really liked the Svetlana's in my other 800 (2204), great midrange and not harsh on the high end. Haven't tried their 12ax7s though as I'm mainly running Tung sols. Not as much low end as the Winged C's but thats not a concern for me. Basically the description from the tube store is pretty accurate. I currently have EH's in there which I am digging as well, but may go back to the Svetlana's next time...

Re: NAD: Marshall dsl 100 head

The EH' seem to be pretty popular maybe due to their lower price. I may give them a shot in the JCM next time around however I really want to try the Tung-sol's too.
I'm running the stock EL34B Chinese tubes in my Quickrod and I have nothing to complain about with them...they've been in the amp over a year now with zero issues.
