NAD: Marshall dsl 100 head

Re: NAD: Marshall dsl 100 head

My JVM had Tung-Sols when I bought it. Until I accidentally destroyed one of them, ruining the quad. They sounded good.

Re: NAD: Marshall dsl 100 head

I really like the Winged C/S.E.D. 6L6 and EL34 tubes in my Mesas, but they are hard to find these days.

Mesa has some NOS Siemens EL34s that should be great, but they are $$$$.

But in Marshall heads, I've heard good things about JJs, and the Mullard and Tung-Sol reissues.

i believe i am going JJ for now and get a feel for those. the tech that is gonna be doing my work has been using them for a long time and swears by them in marshalls.

I was skeptical before Savage Audio recommended a set for my 2555. They sound good in there, but the real surprise came when I tried them in my Mini. The stock Tung-Sols had a cool Fender-y vibe on the clean channel, but were really nasal and thin on the gain channel. The JJs are like the perfect blend of an EL-34 and 6550 in that amp.

I don't like the Mullard reissue. They are pretty much the same stuff Mike Matthews is also peddling under eh and sovtek as far as I could tell. I've found JJ to always be pretty solid, I particularly like their rendition of the kt77.

I really like the EH 6CA7 in the mini. I like them in just about everything though. I really like what they do to the bottom end of most amps.

The reissue Mullard seems a little polite, but I really like them in a NMV amp run with just hint of breakup.

My Tweaker sounds GREAT with EHX 6CA7 power tubes. Plenty of bottom end and a crisp, detailed high-end response. Killer stuff and they weren't expensive.
Of course, how that translates into a 100 watts Marshall is beyond me, but they're a great choice and also they ran crazy hot for 2-3 years and didn't die on me.

Re: NAD: Marshall dsl 100 head

I have used the E34L in Marshalls. I had no complaints. The E34L has a 30 watt plate dissipation, instead of 25 watt, so you must figure that into your bias setting calculations.

Great amp very versitile. The Nashville clean setting is awesome I do not think you will miss the cleans of your Fender much.

Anything between 60%-70% max plate dissipation is reasonable, so using a 25W figure instead of 30W is perfectly fine, many surprisingly prefer a cooler bias especially on amps that have a lot of preamp gain, and at those figures it won't have much bearing on making the crossover notch more apparent, and is ever so slightly easier on the valve. Over dissipation is what you really want to worry about, especially on most Marshall's. The a-a load Marshall tends to use is not ideal for el34's at the typical 470-480vdc plate and screen voltage, especially when the el34's are biased near 70% of their max plate dissipation, so it's not uncommon to see some red plate only under signal conditions but stop when in idle if some things are not put in check. However this heavy loading is a part of the sound. I would play it on the safer side but that's just me. A lot of the older, older Marshall's don't have this problem, because they had less efficient pt's with arguably poorer regulation, which caused the power supply to dip enough under larger signal excursion in order to push the load line below the knee.

No I actually like the clean of a Marshall. I play mostly metal and classic rock so I truly didn't need fender chime

Re: NAD: Marshall dsl 100 head

Yes, and a little bigger on the bottom end as well

That's what I've heard as well.

If I remember correctly the EL-34ii goes in the opposite direction for less output and earlier breakup; not something I'd be interested in. As great as the regular JJ EL-34 sounds in my amps, I'm not sure I want to try anything else.

Re: NAD: Marshall dsl 100 head

Not just what I've heard, I've compared them to JJEL34's in the same amp. Been meaning to try the ii though as they sound right down my alley, and like you describe

Re: NAD: Marshall dsl 100 head

I bias my cool for the dsl 40 at 32, my tech says any higher you just burn the tubes out faster. Its not as bright either

I have those in my Bogner xtc and they are amazing tubes, you can expect a big fat bottom end, they sound different from regular EL34's going more towards the 6L6 spectrum. Mine lasted a long time too before I had to get a fresh pair. Good choice.
