NAD!! Mesa Boogie content

Re: NAD!! Mesa Boogie content

I'm starting to think I need to try out a Mesa. I've been anti-Mesa for a long time, and I MAYYYY possibly be mistaken on that sentiment...

I can relate, and I am a Dual Rec owner! Definitely not my go-to amp, but it scratches an itch in a way that only Mesa can.

Welcome to the club. I love mine. I run it in the variac mode and 45 watt with a Marshall Power Brake into the 2 x 12 Recto cab. What cab and speaker combo are you running?

Congrats! Always cool to hear stories of finding That piece of gear! Isnt that model the one thats supposed to cover like every mesa sound? If so, does it cover the tri rec? Im curious to tri one. Ive never gelled with any Mesa amps ive tried before, but I think its cuz I didnt have any time to try and dial it in. That and the only 2 ive played have been one of the little 5.0 models and a mini rec.

Is that AFD the bomb? My local GC got one in on trade a few months ago. Was gone in a day

It's meant to contain all the Mark series circuits, so it doesn't do Recto sounds, unfortunately. I really dig the Mini Rec, I gigged one for about a year when they first came out. The clean channel is standout, way better than the older Duals.

The AFD is my "never sell unless I need money to eat" amp. I'm a huge Slash fan, and a LP into this absolutely nails the vibe of the AFD album tone. And the power scaling circuit works amazingly well.

Wow, that is one of my favourite amps!

Sigh, me too. But unfortunately the master voltage scaling mechanism is far from perfect (and to be honest, I think power scaling will never work 100% for Class A non-master type circuits), and I found that I spent a lot of time struggling with choking the amp down, and hardly ever had the opportunity to let it shine. Even at band volumes, I could never run it with the master voltage wide open at sane volumes, which was a damn shame. It was a tough decision, but I'm pretty happy with the Mk V - though a low wattage EF86 based circuit is something I'd certainly like to revisit in future. Perhaps a Vox AC4HW1 or something.

Interesting! How come you're running a Power Brake? The Mk V has one of the BEST master volumes I've come across so far, and combined with the wattage options, I've been pretty happy at low volumes.

Cab-wise, I'm running a Blackstar Artisan 2x12". Vintage 30s, and it's oversized in the Bogner style rather than the Recto style - taller rather than deeper. A quad with Greenbacks is on my GAS list though!
