NAD Peavey 6505

Re: NAD Peavey 6505

Never been a fan of cutting the mids, always have them on at least 6, I don't play full out metal, but post-hardcore/metalacore type stuff (ADTR/Chunk No Captain Chunk, etc) so I have to cut through the mix.

Gain is on 4 now and I use an Ibanez Tubescreamer to boost the lead channel, works far better than high gain on the amp, I find it a bit mushy and lacks clarity. The tubescreamer adds low end and a bit more definition to the notes.

Interested to see what a hand-wired tubescreamer would make.

Uh, that part sounds backwards to me.

The way I like to use the 5150 is rhythm on the green channel, lead on the red. They are even labeled that way, go figure :D The green channel is tighter and more contoured (eg. lows and highs). The red channel is looser and more midrange-y. Feels natural that way and the shared eq becomes a neat feature rather than a drawback or limitation.

HUH ? . . . what tuubskreemr do you have ?

I have NEVER encountered an Ibanez pedal that boost/add to the lows . . . not even their BB-9 Bottom Booster, 'boost' the lows (at all really) as i want it.

Re: NAD Peavey 6505

I just ordered a nice polyester ( not vinyl) padded amp cover for it , so I can try and keep it from getting dinged. 60 bucks..ouch!

As in tighten it up, without the tubescreamer it sounds floppy and lacks focus. Kick it on and its a lot tighter. That's what I meant. And yes I'm talking about the red channel.

There's a YouTube vid of Adam D from Killswitch Engage showing it well with the Maxon OD808.

The TS9, I think there's better but it works for me. Boost as in tighten it up, may have chosen the wrong word. Either way my ears tell me it sounds good!

Re: NAD Peavey 6505

Awesome amp and killer deal too. Congratulations. I was playing a 6505 at Guitar Center a while back and at least 3 people stopped by me and commented that my lead tone sounded great. If I found a deal like that, I'd snag one too.

Re: NAD Peavey 6505

That's a great deal! I have the 6505+, and I use it with a Peavey XXX cab, though I also have a G Flex, and I think that's a great match for the 6505. The 6505 certainly gets brutal in my opinion. Way more gain available than I ever use. I need to spend some more time with mine and discover more of its capabilities. I dialed in a nice sizzly crunch tone and have just been using that. They say you can dial in blues and classic rock tones with the 6505, but everything I've been able to dial in sounds metal.
The amp seems inherently scooped sounding, so perhaps cranking up the midrange control would deliver some classic rock tones. But if you're most interested in brutal metal tones, I'm with the guys who have suggested putting all the controls at 12 o'clock (mine sounds like Iron Maiden when set that way) and then crank the high end and low end if you want more, and set the gain to your tastes.

With my AMT P2 preamp (6505 emulator) boosting the treble and mids and turning the gain down to almost nothing results in something righteously close to AC/DC. That's if the poweramp is somewhat loud, though.

I'll probably get all sorts of crap for that statement, but whatever.

Yeah, the poweramp has to be up. The 6505 is an amp that is flat out loud, anyway you look at it. It doesn't get that Brootalz thing happening unless its ridiculously loud. I live a quarter mile from anyplace, but its still too loud to turn up in the dead of night without worrying someone might hear it.
I can try playing it during the day when there s traffic and other noise to compete.

Re: NAD Peavey 6505

This is a 6505+ by the way, which has more gain and is meatier than the 6505 I've heard, that's why I need less pre-gain esp if boosting with a pedal.

Wait, what? well slap my asz and call me sally. i thought the only difference was shared controls? Years ago i bought a beat to sh!t OG 5150 for 150 (worked fine) then sold it for 350 to make some quick paper. Shoulda kept it. Derp :dunce:

MMmmmm . . . i was told by several folks that the 5150 had the raw'er, grittier, gnarlier (sp?) tone of the two, and that th e6505 had the smoother, more refined, and more modern tone.

Re: NAD Peavey 6505

It only takes a small fix to make the 5150/6505 manageable at any volume and tighter and clearer.

this be correct.

Oh, I don't do drugs.

But seriously folks ... do you have a schematic of that mod please? I will say that I probably like it just the way it is enjoy the dark veiled loose bass..to me, thats what makes it get extremely brutal and 'Recto'ish'(?).

Display-wise yes. I haven't actually played a 6505 before but that's what I've been reading.

I just know what works for me is a trade-off, either use less gain on the amp and boost with the OD, or use more gain on the amp but back off the level on the OD.

My ears tell me it sounds good, so I stick with it.
