NAD: Randall MTS

Made a trade, and got this. Randall's MTS 50 watt 1x12 combo. It has the ability to change out the all-tube preamp modules for others at any time, but it came loaded with a Blackface module, which models a Twin, and an XTC module, which models the red channel of a Bogner Ecstasy. G12T75 speaker, even though it has an Emi label on the front. Strange.

It was easy enough to get the channels EQ'd out so they sound similar, and the tones are awesome. The Twin model has more gain at lower levels than the Fender it emulates, but it adds just the right amount of growl for semi clean rhythms with my LP. The XTC sounds great with the gain around 10 o'clock and the level around 6 or 7...it cleans up enough for rhythms slightly dirtier than the Twin side.

Enough blather.

Pics.

I've been reading up on these, and it seems that there are tons and tons of modded modules to explore. These guys take a your module, and for a fee, sit and tweak it right next to the amp you're emulating, and get it exact. Could be addictive...:scratchch

Not yet. No recording stuff here, but my friend has a little digital recorder and is coming here on Saturday, so I'll get a few clips up then.

It's loud, for sure. I got the volume on half, and it kills my JCA20H into the 2x12.

Re: NAD: Randall MTS

I picked up a RM20 head a couple months ago as a low wattage practice amp. One of the modders, Jaded Faith, soon after released a limited edition mod called the 1959RR Platinum Edition (see link below). Basically, this thing has all the Marshall tones you could want. That's my one and only mod currently and it kills. I have an XTC LE mod coming from Sacred Groove this week and am working with Scott at Sacred Groove on an Uberschall mod. Should be fun!

that's freakin cool. I'd love to get into this stuff.

Re: NAD: Randall MTS

Those are sweet amps.

I'm pretty sure with the RM100 model, one could put El34s on the ends and 6l6s in the middle.

The problem I found with the MTS series is that they all sounded the same. Granted to modded modules sound fantastic but you're paying $300-$500 a pop.

I never tried swapping tubes though (both pre and power) when I had mine.

Still the XTC stock was my favorite module

Re: NAD: Randall MTS

For sure the mods will be where it's at. I've read a bunch of reviews that say the modules all sound alike. The Egnator modules are reported to sound much better then the Randall ones, but the stock modules don't sound bad, at all.

Re: NAD: Randall MTS

It's all in eq and eq'ing the preamp to the actual amp it's based off.

However, nice score.

I love the features such as tube failure lights, how if one fails it takes that tube out of the signal, etc.

it's a nice amp, internal fan is cool, heavy as heck though

I'd like to tweak those two knobs...

It's heavy alright. 74 pounds. The transformers are the size of grapefruits.

That's a great idea and a good choice, congratz and enjoy your AMPS!

Thanks, and I will. I can't wait to play out with it, and then start thinking of the next modules I might want. I might just go for the XTC mod that Jaded Faith does...it models the Ecstasy's blue AND red channels, plus a plexi mode, and an extra gain switch. That would give me a lot of options for lead tones, for around $180.

That sounds pretty sick man. You check out grailtone at all? That forum is filled with randall mts gear heads. I love the XTC as a rhythm tone. SOme people actually dig that module stock. I never tried it modded, but from the sounds of it that would be bad@$$.
