NAD - Well almost...

Went to pick up the Aeropress coffee maker today and thought I'd pop into a music/pawn shop on a whim to see if they had anything cool there and to see what the retail price on the Blackout Modular preamp was if they had that info yet.

Saw a JCM-800 2204 model when I walked in the door that looked really dirty and old. Some idiot had spray painted white around the output jack on the back and there were a couple of small tolex rips. White paint specks are dotted all over the top of the tolex. Thought to myself "lets see what kind of exorbitant price these jokers are charging for this" when I started to flip over the tag.

$599.99

That's right. $599.99..

I strolled over to ask the proprieter if the amp worked and he affirmed that it did. I told him that I would buy it if it was functional and didn't sound too bad. The idiot he sent over to plug everything in didn't know how to do it properly and turned the amp on with no cable plugged into the back end of the amp. I was sitting in front of it holding an Ibanez while he did his thing and nearly fried the OT I'm sure. The other attendant who knows amps happened to stroll by and set the idiot straight and plugged it in for him. I assumed that since he worked at a pawn/music store that he knew not to run a head without plugging it in. Bad assumption on my part. No damage done from what I could tell as he didn't crank up the master and apparently we got lucky.

Running with the guitar straight into the amp, it was very clean when ran at lower volumes. Didn't dirty up all that much when cranked either. That was exactly what I expected it to be. I didn't have the cash to take it home with me, so I put it on lay-away. I might have to sell off my stuff, but I'll definitely be happy with this amp. Though I do enjoy the sound of the Peavey Butcher I've modded quite a bit, I don't enjoy the intense volumes it requires to sound good and I also don't enjoy the heavy cabinet etc. Good for the cost and effort involved, but nowhere near as good as a lower wattage and real-deal JCM-800 will be I'm sure. My fragile ears will thank me as well.

I may be getting a bonus at the end of this month to pay for the rest of this amp. If I don't get that bonus, I will still be able to pay it off using extra cash left over from my paychecks. Either way, I will be taking that amp home with me even if I have to sell my plasma.

For those purists and collectors out there, this amp would require a pretty heavy investment to return it to collectible status. I bought it to play and to keep. I do intend to slightly mod the pre-amp just the same way I modded the Butcher's pre. Nothing other than some value changes in two or three places and that will be all I do to it. Every part of the mod will be completely reversible and I won't be getting rid of the original components. I'll find a way to keep them inside the head enclosure. The mods will noticeably increase the gain and the bass response of the amp while still retaining the Marshall roar that these amps are noted for.

As is often said.....this thread is useless without pics

How's your coffee maker??

Re: NAD - Well almost...

I'll deliver pix when I take her home with me and spend a day trying to undo the damage the previous owner did to her. Until then, we are all just going to have to wait. :)

If you see what Ayrton can do to a beat up Marshall cab, I would not despair Gr8Scott! ;)
Admitted Ayrton has some serious cab making/restoring skills, but I bet you'll do a good job on your JCM 800 too!
While redoing it you'll have the chance to put in some of your personal taste in it looks (color scheme for example), you can make it pretty much what you want!

Best of luck with it mate, take your time restoring it to your likings and at the end, it will be incredibly rewarding seeing your "new" amp redone to your likings, kind of starting it's second life, a more luxuary one then it ever had! ;)

Have furn with it and keep us posted!

Once you get that thing all fixed up and get some new tubes in her, she'll Roar! I love my 2204 a lot. You better start saving your money for an attenuater/hot plate though. lol

Why save money for an attenuator when I already own a Weber Mass 100? :naughty:

Thanks for the well wishes folks. I've had a very good day today. Been drinking excellent coffee and have a down payment on one of my dream amps.

Tolex rips aren't a problem for me. The tolex is not missing anywhere, just raised up. A little contact cement and a black magic marker will do her up just fine. As for the paint, I'll be able to remove everything on the back plate I think. IIRC, the back plate is anodized aluminum. Solvents won't harm anything except the black lettering that is in place there. A little paint remover or thinner will remove the white paint nicely methinks while leaving the anodizing intact. If I could find a way to do this without removing the word "Output" while still getting rid of every trace of the paint, I'd do it. I'll get someone with a label maker to make one up for me with the word "Output" on it. I can likely remove the paint specks from the tolex with a scouring pad or brillo pad.

The front panel with the Marshall name is intact, but is really filthy and possibly faded. I'll try a good cleaner to freshen it up. Maybe use a brush or something to really get in there and clean it up nice.

I'll bet that once I get done with it, it will be very tough to call it anything other than 96% condition and that will only be because the word output is missing on the back. The rest of it will be in great condition. Though the amp is dirty and somewhat abused by an idiot, the overall structure is great from what I can tell.

ya my 2204 is an from 1983 and some of the words on the front panel have fanded a little bit. Like "power" and "standby" have faded a little bit, but hey you gotta remember, these amps are 25+ yrs old. Which 2204 model is yours? does it have the verical inputs?

No vertical inputs. Not that I really care all that much about that. I mean it would be nice for less of the board to be mounted to the front of the chassis, but I'm certainly not going to cry in my beer because it's not a vert. I'm just thrilled that I got an amp that I revere for such a ridiculous price.

Alex R - It's really good IMHO. I'm very happy with all my purchases today. LOL.

oh trust me, once you get that thing re-tubed and all set up, you're never going to need or want another amp again

Re: NAD - Well almost...

My thoughts exactly. These amps sound like an angry deity when cranked and that is precisely what I want. Strats and Les Pauls alike love this amp. That isn't something that is easy to find. They say that the JMP-6000 has a crunch channel that duplicates the JCM-800, but I can tell a difference between them. The difference is admittedly slight, but it is audible in a head to head comparison. The 2204 just has a throaty midrange snarl that the 6000 doesn't quite duplicate.

what is in the power section? 6550's or EL34's?

Re: NAD - Well almost...

I have no idea. They were pretty tall and not quite as thin as the EL34's that I remember, but not quite as thick as the 6L6 tubes are either. From the sound, it was also hard to tell. Probably 6550's knowing my luck. It shouldn't be all that difficult to swap it over to EL34's though I would think... I'll research that now.

After looking up some pix of 6550 tubes... It had to have EL34's in it. Whatever they were, they were beefy looking.

Yeah, you'd know if they were 6550s. They don't call them "big bottles" for no good reason. Congrats! I miss my old 800 all the time.

Re: NAD - Well almost...

I'm torn up about this amp. I can't believe that anyone was dumb enough to spray paint it and then even dumber to sell it. I'd like to shake that idiots hand and thank him for his incredible stupidity. His stupidity ruined it's resale value and I can turn right back around and boost that back up (not that I'm ever planning on selling this amp) with a little elbow grease and some solvent. Man what a good week. Can't wait until the end of this month to see if I get a bonus or not. I'd take this baby home and dare the GF to gripe about it. LOL.
