NADx2

Might be loosing my marbles but I scored two ridiculous deals today

A Marshall JCM2000 TSL 60wt head and a Peavey Penta head, I may or may not keep them but too good a deal not to take advantage of.

More details to follow but I'll tell you a Penta is SVT heavy holy ****

Re: NADx2

I always liked them but they get a lot of negative reviews. We'll see I really grabbed it for a friend more than for me but I have a feeling I'll end up with it.

Re: NADx2

Ooh a Penta! Looking forward to a onceover from you sir. Those things always had the vibe of the old M60 with an ammo box leaning in the corner; large, unsubtle and imminently dangerous.

Re: NADx2

exactly!

It'll be getting a run thru later today.

The TSL is OK, used it for rehearsal thru my 4x12. A little fizzy compared to my Orange but Marshall-y enough to get it done. Have to mess with it, not even sure what tubes are in it.

Re: NADx2

COOL!

The Penta was a MUCH cooler amp than folks would have you believe...if you can crank them up a bit, maybe around half way then bust them in the front end with a good gritty boost they are beasts!

Re: NADx2

weird "pentatone" knob. Tree? Mudflap Girl? Star?
When's the last time you heard someone say their amp kicks ass on the Tree setting?
Part of me thinks more amps should have a tree or cactus setting. I don't care what the knob does at that point as long as I can say I set my amp to Tree mode.

Re: NADx2

So I took them to my friends' band practice today to open them up a bit.

The TSL is pretty good, my bud's 100wt version ate it up a bit but he also runs very hot pickups and pushes the front end quite a bit. I really think the power tubes in this thing are kind of close to the end of their run though, not enough oomph, sounds a little tired to me. The guys were calling dibs on it though so??

As for the Penta it sounded great for a minute then we couldn't keep it running. Didn't have any tools so I had to wait to get it home to see what was up? One of the power tubes had come loose....bummer. Amp is OK, fired it up thru my 4x10 and didn't even have to push to get some great sounds. The clean is nice but without some verb kind of flat. The star, bull and cactus settings freaking kill, excellent. Vintage-y Marshall to hot rod 800 sounds a plenty, very Aerosmith-y, the good kind. The Mudflap/XXX setting is so-so. Sounds like they went for the Ultra channel not the Crunch channel. It weighs a stupid amount and having both trannies on the same side make it a little awkward to carry but it is built like a brick ****ouse. It looks great too, love the green/cream mix. Sovtek pre's and JJ PT's in it now, not sure what they came with?

Re: NADx2

I gotta admit, I was sort of expecting am Orange Graphic/FAC kind of thing, with the huge wattage and the voice knob. I'm a little disappointed in that it isn't a deep-belly rumbler.

Re: NADx2

Well it is mostly Marshall voiced so....and yes the Aerosmith tones are old school Aerosmith.

It throws some bottom end but I didn't get to open it up thru the 4x12 so we'll see Monday night how it does.

Re: NADx2

A TSL 60, hmm. I would be tempted to mod it to take 6550s in the poweramp.

And if you want to knock off some of that fizz, throw some Mullard reissues (or originals if you can afford them) in the gain stages.

Re: NADx2

If I keep it I'll have my tech give the once over, he's a big time Marsha guy.

I played the Penta for a while last night at a fairly low volume and it sounded great. Very happy with it.

Re: NADx2

Nice score! I love my Penta. It sounds good even at reasonable volumes.
I use it in the home studio and add reverb in mixing so I don't miss an onboard reverb. If I could change one thing, I'd want a low wattage version. In my application, I will never need 140 watts.
I like the clean channel. It's a thick, warm clean that is a cool alternative to the sparkly Fender clean tone I can get with other amps.
I like how the other three useable voicings clean up nicely if set to lower gain levels, and each have their own character - one like a 60's or 70's Marshall, one like an 80's Marshall, and one a little like a Bogner.
The mudflap girl setting is extra filler, nothing I'll probably ever use. I have a Triple XXX combo amp and a 6505+ head that cover that base much better.
The Penta cab has Peavey-branded Celestion G12T-75s in it. It sounds very good.

Re: NADx2

something tells me the clean and mudflap settings sounded better with a bit of volume behind them...

pentas were released here, but were crazy expensive. will you use it live? it should be loud enough, lol

Re: NADx2

Might use it for a gig tomorrow, little larger stage and a big room.

All 3 of the Marshall-esque settings are great, really I am thrilled with them. The Clean and the Mud are OK. I love the XXX but it sounds like they used the Ultra not the Crunch channel and the EQ doesn't respond the same way as on the X. The clean is a bit dark but not bad.

I wish the weight was a little more balanced, both trannies on the same side is a little awkward.

I had the master at about 1/4 of the way up and it was plenty loud, running into to my 412MS cab, they seemed like a good match. Sounded ripping thru my 4x10 too.

Re: NADx2

Well the Marshall is going back, very disappointing amp overall. Too many knobs and not enough that give you any real tone.

The PV is a freaking monster amp, the Bull setting seems to be the sweet spot. It gets all the right sounds and you don't have to open up to full bore to get them.
