Nato neck?

Re: Nato neck?

Nato, also known as Eastern mahogany, has a warm resonance, is very strong, and is often used in the necks of less expensive electric guitars because it's not as costly as mahogany.

I'm asking specifically in relation to the AES620. I know Guitar Player or some other magazine gave it rave reviews, and yes it has a JB bridge, but I'm wondering if it's going to have at least a decent sound to it. What do you think, theodie?

Re: Nato neck?

To be honest, I have never played that wood nor, do I have any experience with it to my knowledge. I just googled it and got that description. It saw a very similar description from a few different sources though.

Re: Nato neck?

a LOT of companies use nato as a mahogany substitute, especially in acoustic guitars. ive played some of the lower end martins and taylors that had nato back and sides and sounded very nice.

that model number sounds like an ibanez, and i know nothing about ibanez but if they are known to have good wood selection then i wouldnt worry about it. Nato is going to be the major replacement for the mahogany used just now when it becomes too expensive, it is good wood no doubt. Like anything else though, you get good pieces and bad pieces. If ibanez has a good rep for that kind of thing then im sure it will be fine

Re: Nato neck?

My APX sounds good enough. Shure seems firm enough.

Re: Nato neck?

I think nato resonates a lot better than agathis, which has all the resonance of a guitar made from silly putty, IMHO

Main reason I asked. My agathis guitar sounded ok with the Hot Rodded combo, but otherwise the wood had no pleasing qualities at all. A guitar with Duncan Designed pickups but mahogany neck and body sounds ten times better already (and even better with Seymour Duncan pickups).

Re: Nato neck?

Dunno man, if that's the Yamaha AES620, either I played a REALLY really crappy one or they're WAY out there.

For the price I can get twice the guitar the AES620 is...

I owned a 620, and it was a great sounding guitar. Action was great, look was really good. I honestly found the neck and playability very stiff. You know how a good guitar will kind of melt into your hands and just feel good. I could never get this out of this guitar. I played it in the showroom a lot, and I thought, it's new, it'll get better. It never felt good to me. I also had a 420,same issues. Otherwise really good guitars. I have had nato necks on other guitars with no issues. So I cannot say that the nato neck caused the stiffness. It probably had more to do with the design and maybe scale of guitar.

Re: Nato neck?

Nato is used for many Asian built classical guitars...including those with solid (not plywood) tops in the $1000 range.

As far as which overtones are expessed as "tone" with a nato neck, I have no idea. Nylon strings have so much less inertia/sustain/spank, yet nylon strings sound just fine with nato...and nylon string instruments need all the help they can get!

I have a Takamine C132S that turns twenty next year:
