Set-up:
Guitar: Ibanez ARZ307
Amp: Peavey Vypyr 30 head with 2 112 Vypyr Cabs
The nazgül is awesome. I've finally dialed in a kirk windstein - crowbar-esque tone that i'm really digging on the dual rec model on my amp. I've been going back in forth between that and a lamb of god-ish tone on the krank model.
The pickup isn't as saturated as i initially thought it would be, and that's turning out to be a good thing. however, It's still really hot- if that makes any sense. The voicing seems a little more modern sounding than any of the other high output 7 string models. So much clarity, yet it doesn't get really fizzy or fuzzy. kind of similar to some BKP demos I've heard. It's super crisp and focused. I love the midrange and high end. The low end is perfect too. The EQ is perfect for really digging in, galloping, chugging, alternate picking - whatever... and doesn't get muddy on the low B string.
I'll try to record some stuff. my only means of doing so now is the speaker sim line out on my head into my soundcard. Maybe i can grab a decent mic and some sort of DAW eventually.
The cleans are good too IMO, a tad jangly, but with pre-gain on the amp set right I don't even have to roll back the volume on the guitar to prevent breakup. The pickup is set about 2.75mm from the strings.
Sentient- I've never had much use for a neck pickup, however I am expanding my horizons. I can only compare it to the 490R in my gibson SG and the sentient really shines in comparison. The cleans are excellent. Its really full sounding. the high end is just right, and there is a mid scoop, It's been described as kind of a mix of the JazzN and 59N- so i guess that's accurate from the demos I've heard and what the specs show. Its really clear with chords even under high gain. Its not flubby sounding or too bassy. Also the little bits of lead work I've attempted it sings nicely. I had to set it to about the same distance from the strings as the nazgül is for the volume to match. I guess that's the nature of the beast and shouldn't be surprising. I'll be experimenting with the sentient more now that I've gotten the nazgül dialed in just like i want it.
