Chickenwings
Alnico 6/8
I had my jtm based master volume head and 2x12 converted into a 1x12 combo.
Two reasons:
1. a single combo is easier to carry at gigs than a head and 2x12
2. I can lean a combo back and have it pointing up at me, so i hear it clearer and the audience (and sound engineer don't get a faceful).
I will miss the complexity of having two different speakers. I recorded two songs last week with the two speakers and two mics in stereo. I will have them up once they get mastered. However, the one speaker sounds a little thicker doing all the work so in the end its all probably just swings and roundabouts. Its a big combo for a 1x12 (about the same size as my twin reverb) but it sounds big too. Nice and light to carry tho.
Its a loud amp (god knows how the builder came up with his 25 watt rating from a pair of el34s because its a lot louder than my twin). So ive used the warm, thick and not too efficient texas heat to make it sound big yet not too loud. It keeps up nicely with a drummer with the volume at 9 o clock. Other speakers ive tried are the private jack- nice but i worry that this amp might blow it as its a 50 watt speaker, and a g12h30: awesome but just way too loud and present and also 30watt rating is asking for trouble.
And a nice pic of the devil eyes smouldering away inside the el34s.
Any Aussies looking for their own custom built amp/cab combo should check out http://www.erics.com.au/cabs.a5w
Eric is a great guy and makes these great units in his own home. The amps are hand wired true PTP and he really takes pride in his cab work.
