Neck crack - HELP!!!!

Aceman

I am your doctor of love!
My Neon Yellow Kramer shred stick has developed a problem. Gigged with it this weekend - everything just fine. But - I'm pretty sure I need to take some preventative measures or it won't turn out that way! I really like this guitar and would like to preserve it if at all possible.

This is definitely a crack. So far, though, it seems pretty sturdy/stable. I believe that an injection of wood glue and calming can prevent this from going south. What say you?

Re: Neck crack - HELP!!!!

Yes, titebond wood glue. If you can move it ever so slightly and carefully to open up the crack a little more, syringe some glue up in there, so much it comes out other areas. Wipe excess off with a damp rag. Clamp with a good hand clamp, and let sit. That joint will be the strongest part of the neck. And if you believe Kirk Hammet....well.... you know it’ll sound better.

I couldn't imagine moving it enough to get syringe in there - at least not one that would shoot glue!

You’re probably right. I glanced at the pic before responding. I would still try to syringe it. Like a real dopers syringe, and try to squirt it as far up in there as you can.

Re: Neck crack - HELP!!!!

How did that happen?

I hate when they drill thru the neck (at the weakest point mind you) to install a lock nut.

The crack looks like there is dirt in there? Remove the nut and flush the crack with alcohol or naphtha and let it dry overnight.

Can you flex the crack at all? If not, then some water thin CA glue and a clamp will have to do.

The thin stuff has a mind of its own, so remove the neck and you can even tape up around the work area. Fill the crack by using a few drops at a time. Don't flood it as it may just squirt out the underside.

Try to glue and then clamp within a minute or two as the thin stuff can dry quickly.

Hit me up with questions.

Re: Neck crack - HELP!!!!

If you can open it a little, use titebond with a syringe and then compressed air to blow it in further...

Re: Neck crack - HELP!!!!

Honestly, I'd take that to Ben at TB Guitar Repair. He will fix it up good.

Re: Neck crack - HELP!!!!

I would think titebond as opposed to super glue or gorilla glue

You want Titebond. It's reversible, unlike the other two. You can thin it down a little, but take it easy. Get your syringe from a veterinarian supply (online or face or face).

Re: Neck crack - HELP!!!!

My gut instinct says to let it be for a while to see how it shapes up. It would actually be easier to repair more solidly if the break was worse than it is. It might not ever get worse, and may end up being something you can live with. And if it does indeed get worse, then the repair will be better and easier when it is finally performed.

Also, a replacement neck probably wouldn't run you too much.

If it were me and it wouldnt open up enough to get any glue in there, I'd almost wait to see what happens, and until it gets to the point where it can be repaired properly. Or you can pull the neck off and open it up a bit...

Probably what I'll do. She has three gigs up before I can do that though. But I can't open it up any, so for the moment...ok.
