Neck noise like Tissue Paper

Hey guys,

Bought a guitar today off CL (someday i'll learn) and the relief was just a bit too high. Otherwise solid looking great playing guitar. Anyway, when i got it home under the microscope i noticed a bit of discoloration under the first fret 3rd string, like a hairline crack had been filled at some point. Now after adjusting the trussrod about 1/8 to 1/16 turn, there is a little bit of noise like tissue paper crinkling or scotch tape being unstuck with any neck pressure, especially when the guitar is picked up. I doubt a fretboard or trussrod could have been replaced as the fretboard is ebony and the glue line looks factory. Truss rod hardly looks messed with, hard to tell. Any ideas what it should be? should i pack her up and go back a knockin'? Am i just being hyper-sensitive?

Will post pictures if that helps.

Thanks!

Re: Neck noise like Tissue Paper

picture and clarification on what you're speaking of.

You're essentially saying that if the guitar is involved in any sort of movement, there's a sound coming from INSIDE the neck, is that correct? If so, it sounds like the truss rod is pushing up against the fretboard in it's curve, and either removing the fretboard from the neck, or splitting the wood (which can sound a lot like scotch tape being removed, and could be the filler).

Several detailed pics in different lighting conditions (preferably outside, tends to show the truest detail) and a more in depth description could really help.

Thanks for the response beandip. Guess i wasn't sure what exactly to take a picture of besides the filled crack, so here's one of those. If you need more, let me know. It is currently the only visible damage. I also attached a soundclip. The noise in question should speak for itself. Oddly, i put another 1/8 turn in and the noise is slightly decreased in volume. Putting my ear down next to the fretboard it sounds like there is noise all the way down, with the loudest around the 7-9th fret. I've tried really thumping the E string, but no vibration in the fretboard yet, so if that's going it hasn't started big time yet.

The noise really only comes with motion of the fretboard forward and back, as in towards the body and towards the back of the body. There is a little noise wiggling it side to side also. not so much while playing, just while picking it up and while trying to get it to happen. Doesn't take much force.

Looks and sounds like to me that the truss rod is causing your issue by pushing against the fretboard and causing it to split.

There's several courses of action, none which are really a DIY skill level. Your best bet is to jump on ebay and possibly find a neck to replace it. No tools required, nothing but a string winder and a phillips head (if it's a bolt on neck).

If this is a set neck bass, or neck through, well you're on your own.

Neck thru. Uh oh. Well, Hope he's as nice today as he was yesterday...

Chances of the issue getting worse... very good?

If I was you, I'd be asking for a refund...

What guitar is it, anyway?

Re: Neck noise like Tissue Paper

cut the neck off and glue a new one on. Or duct tape. Whatever gets the job done.

Re: Neck noise like Tissue Paper

Ran out of duct tape, but he took it back just fine. Thankful for those folks out there who really are honest. And thanks to you guys for the info on this one so quick. Time was definitely of the essence!
