Neck Pickup for Lespaul??

hey guys,
I want your suggestions for some neck pickups for Lespauls. I am using the Custom Sh-5 for bridge. for neck, I need somthing that is seriuosly thick. not overally high output. maybe somthing along the lines of the Custom output.. but need somthing thick and smooth sounding. Somthing i can use for slow lead work and fast lead work, and some shred :)

The Jazz man. Its exactly what you're looking for and will balance nicely with the Custom in the bridge dude. Its warm and articulate, which you need for soloing and lead work, but not bright at all.

I can say DON'T go 59. In mohogany it's muddy as hell. Cleans are great, but the distortion...It's really muddy. I'd say Jazz, or possibly the Full Shred.

I think there would be a lot to disagree with that muddy 59 comment in mahogany, not that ive got one and are talking from experience but ive heard very very different things.

The 59n is far from muddy in mahogany or any other wood for that matter. I've used it in mahogany, mahogany/maple, alder, basswood and basswood/maple and it always retained it's clarity.

Blame you amp, settings, tunings, speakers or whatever but the 59n is not to blame for mud.

You use 100 watt Mesa-Boogie amps tho, don't you Robert? And your tone is usually rock and roll (slightly distorted) from what I've heard of your clips.

Through smaller amps (40 watts and less) the 59N can put out to much bass, and when I roll down the bass on the amp to compensate then the bridge pickup gets thinner...and that's not always a good thing.

Alot of guys prefer a neck bucker with less bass than the 59N for that exact reason...Seymour Duncan himself for one!

Depending on what the individual guitar sounds like the '59n, and PGn are my personal faves for an LP neck pickup. From what I have heard though the Jazz rules as an LP neck pup. I am planning on trying one very soon. God bless :)

bahahah! no Gibby's here, this is the SEYMOUR DUNCAN FORUM!! lol anyway, you might want to give the Jazz a shot, because it would be extremely clear, and articulate for "fast jazz runs", among other fast things. Besides, if you don't like it.... TRADE IT IN!

Lew, my primary gigging amp is actually a 90 watt a side stereo Mesa rack, but I also own an 84 Marshall, a Crate 80 watt POS and a 22 watt (give or take) 1955 Supro. In the past I have owned Fenders, Musicman, Ampeg and a few other amps. My clips were all recorded through a Pod so that really doesn't count. My clips more representitive of what I look for in tone and response then they are a recreation of what I get in real life.

While the 59n can sound boomy in some rigs it occurs as more of a bright neck pickup to me and I have a hard time actually making the 59n sound muddy. While I do believe that it is possible to get mud from any pickup, I don't find muddiness to be inherent in the 59n, especially related to wood types.

I kinda agree there. I have a 59n and while I think that it has plenty of bass, it's got soo much treble to offset it that I don't think of it as muddy at all.

By far the 59 has to be the best neck pup ever made.
