Neck pickup - Gibson LPC

Hi!
I`m looking for a neck pickup for my 1980 LPC that can be splitted, with lots of pick attack.
I will be using either the Duncan JB or the Smits EBS-8 in bridge.
Basically I`m looking for a punchier sound in my LPC.

:)

Jazz bridge, DDn or Screamin' Demon should work well with that JB. What amp/pedals do you use and what kind of tones do you need from the neck pickup?

Re: Neck pickup - Gibson LPC

For lots of pick attack I second the Screamin' Demon. Less attack go for the 59.

Re: Neck pickup - Gibson LPC

The Jazz is a low output, rather bland PU, and I don't see why it gets paired with a JB, which is just the opposite. Sounds like you want something with more oomph than this. At the very least you'd want a '59, and probably the bridge model.

What p'ups do you have now? '57 Classics or 490R/498T?

Either the Jazz bridge or the '59 bridge for that neck position will work wonders in a LPC.

The bridge p'up I'd choose is a Custom 5.

But if you have the 490R/498T combo, what I'd do is the following:

I'd swap the magnet out of that 490R and put the A5 magnet from the 498T and I'd put an AlNiCo 8 magnet in the498T. With less than twenty bucks your wish is granted.

Thanks for the input!
I have the Framus Cobra amp - Killer ;)

As for swapping magnets, hmm interesting thought!
I haven`t opened the guitar to check but I think it`s got the T-tops pickups.
(I think the neck pickup is alnico 5)
I might have a Smits alnico 8 laying around..
But will that magnet fit into the Gibson pickups ?

Try that A8 in the bridge & see what you think. It should fit. If the neck has an A5, you should have a decent clear tone from it. An A4 will give it more mid range & punch. First move should be to see if the resources you have now will work. Often times that does it. If not, then you can start your quest for a new PU or two.

I haven`t opened the guitar to check but I think it`s got the T-tops pickups.

Open the guitar, have a look "under the hood", and if possible, take a read of the p'ups with a digital Multimeter set to the 20K setting, then post the results. That'll help to take and educated guess of what's in there.

Btw I have 2 ceramic magnets laying around, how would those two work in the neck and bridge position of the T-tops ?

Thanks :)

Depends on the tones you want. Ceramics are high output, bright, tight, & harsh. Great for metal, massive distortion, & heavy doses of effects. They'll cut thru. If you want an emphasis on overdrive (vs distortion) and nice cleans, then alnicos are a better choice.

If they're double thick ceramics (some are) they won't fit as well.

Re: Neck pickup - Gibson LPC

You could also discover that you LPC are carrying Shaw Pickups. They carry a six digit number - they are highly sought after.
If you LPC is early 1980 they will carry a rubber stamp print of a date like 'FEBR16 1980'. In this case they are very late T-Tops or beginning with June one of the first Shaw pickups (they used up the old parts) - hard to tell.
