Neck Pickup ideas for Custom TB-5 in the bridge

I have a Custom TB-5 and I really love it. I also got just last week a Nazgul Trembucker 6, which is a beast!!! I play mainly Metal; I'm looking for guitar sounds like Exodus, Slayer, Old School Metallica, Death, Testament etc... I'm about to buy a ESP LTD MH-1000 (which comes with EMGs 81/85), but I'm going to change it for passive pickups, the Custom 5 being the bridge one. However, I'm not sure which pickup I shall put in the neck... I'm considering the Jazz SH-2n, the 59 or the JB-4. I would like to know your opinion about it, since I'm new here at the SD Forum. Cheers!!!

I love the 59N, it's the only one that doesn't sound muddy to me.

I see. Do you think the output difference could be an issue? I'm not really concerned about the clean tones, cus I'm going to use the neck pickup more for distorted leads

Re: Neck Pickup ideas for Custom TB-5 in the bridge

I'm talking about distorted tones too. That's when they get the muddiest. I wouldn't worry about the output difference but if you are you could always put a 59 bridge model in the neck. It worked for Dimebag Darrell.

Re: Neck Pickup ideas for Custom TB-5 in the bridge

Just remember Dime was using a super hot bridge pickup. The output difference between your Custom 5 and a 59N is not going to be as much.

Re: Neck Pickup ideas for Custom TB-5 in the bridge

Yeah... If I put the Custom 5 I'm leaning to go for the 59 neck model; if I go for the Nazgul in the bridge than the 59 bridge or perhaps the JB, since the Nazgul is really hot. I paired the Nazgul with a SHR-1 in my guitar (tagima handmade T-Zero) and I really loved! So, probably I will for the original idea.

So... is it a Custom TB-5 or a Custom 5, then?

I have a '59B from the Dime set in the neck position of my Ibanez RGA with a JB in the bridge, and it's not hard to balance out the output with the JB, I find. The JB's around the same output level as the Custom, ain't it?

That being said, though, I also have a DiMarzio PAF Pro in the neck position of my RG570 and I MUCH prefer that pickup compared to the '59. Granted my '59 is a '59B, though.

It's a Custom TB-5. Yes, both the JB and TB-5 have similar output. What do you think about the SH-2n with the TB-5?

The '59N has a bit more meat and character to it compared to it then say a Jazz Neck. Only pitfall is they can be boomy in shorter scale and/or 22 fret guitars (like Les Pauls). You won't have that problem with a 24 fret alder strat.

Sentient? It's not really much hotter than a '59 and is supposed to have better clarity. It also is designed to be paired with the Nazgul(at least that's what I've gathered).

I personally would go for a '59 (or an Air Norton!!), but I'm just throwing in another option.

Re: Neck Pickup ideas for Custom TB-5 in the bridge

The Sentient might be a good option to go indeed. Seymour Duncan's page says it's meant to be paired either with the Nazgul or the Pegasus. I don't really know much about the Air Norton.

I paired the JB with a sentient. It is a good match. (The 59n were a little much, and the jazz a bit to little personality-wise).

infact sentient is said to be inbetween 59n and jazz-n as marketed by SD
