neck vs. bridge

What is the difference between neck and bridge pickups...I know that 2 pups of the same model (like a 59n and a 59b), the bridge will be a little hotter...is that where the differences end or are there other things?

Re: neck vs. bridge

I'm pretty sure that thats the only difference - a few more winds on the coil.
Then, you also have the option of "trem-spacing" on select bridge models.

Re: neck vs. bridge

Maybe the resonant peak is set a little higher also, to balance with the darker nature of the neck position.

I think that this comes from the neck pickup being wound to a lesser resistance than the bridge unit.

Less resistance= higher resonant peak.

Re: neck vs. bridge

not sure if this is reffering to the resonant peak, but for example, the invader neck model is a lot brighter than the bridge to compensate for the bigger bass freqeuences in the neck position

Re: neck vs. bridge

Has anyone ever tried the neck pickups in the bridge?? Like take Screamin Demon bridge for instance....I've been told that the higher resonant peak gives it that open airy type sound. Well the Full Shred neck has an even higher resonant peak at 8.0Khz so it might be possible that it would be even more "open"/"airy" sounding than its' bridge counterparts. On the other hand it could sound like ass too:)

I'm just curious to see if anyone has tried it??

Re: neck vs. bridge

i know people who have used neck pups in the bridge, usually with single coils in the other spots, with good results. in general, putting a neck pup in the bridge will get you a lower output, brighter tone. if thats what you want, then try it

That might actually be a good thing. Brighter doesn't always necessarily mean harsher as harsh to me is sometimes those frequencies that are just above uppermids and just below the higher treble frequencies....

I'd like to give it a shot.

What about bridge pickups into the neck?

A friend of mine has a JB in the neck with an Invader in the bridge of his MIM Strat and it rocks for heavier stuff. BTW, the JB split at the neck sounds quite nice, too. :burnout:

Yeah,I was thinking the same about the Dist.
The nk model is really bright & loud, kinda difficult to balance.

Re: neck vs. bridge

I've always wondered if other things are different, like polarity, wind direction, etc.
I just wish all the pickup makers would decide on ONE polarity, ONE wind direction, and magnet direction. It drives me crazy when trying to mix and match pickups.
Antiquity I's and II's are both wound opposite of each other. Fenders don't mix with Duncans, etc etc.
