Been looking at the TC electronics bass amps lately http://www.tcelectronic.com/bh250/ very small portable 250 watt head 300 bucks the combo comes with a bunch of speaker options for 100 to 200 bucks more. I am going to buy the head for a general all around backup that fits in a small bag.

Probably one of the Peavey heads

You can get one of the Carvin RL600 heads
For $150 on GC used

Its the head version of mine
Excellent amp.
Built in compressor

I'll second the Carvin RL series heads. I personally don't care for them as I like a more colored sound (Ampeg fan here), but those Carvins are clean, cheap, and LOUD. Exactly what you're looking for.

I'd go with that 1000 watt Carvin.

that 1000 watt carvin looks killer as I see it has a built in noisegate as earlier pointed out ;)

Head or combo?

If you score a bass cab, you can use either a dedicated bass head, or even an old PA head.

I recommend Sweetwater for new stuff. Their customer service is really tight.

Re: Need a bass amp that is cheap and loud

I'd recommend an Acoustic. Great value for the money, and I've used an Acoustic on a good number of recordings and got great results, along with letting my bass player borrow it for practices, and he has no problems being heard in a band mix. Great tone as well.

I have that head, I run it through a Phil Jones neo 6x5 cab, and I absolutely love it. Plenty of power, clean tones, and it goes in a gig bag without weighing it down. The older I get, the more I appreciate that.

Re: Need a bass amp that is cheap and loud

Do you have a cabinet already ?

good question

a combo for $400 is not impossible, but ya the 115 combos I have played were not satisfying at all, I could just barely hear em at my indie rock band practices

Don't go too big with your cabinets. Every bassist I know (including me) goes through the phase of thinking they need big cabs and power. Then we buy gear we regret having done so later when that stuff is large and heavy to move around. And then you sell it at a loss because bass gear has high depreciation on the used market.

Whatever you do buy used and reap the savings. A 115 should be more than enough for practice. Maybe a more efficient speaker would be the answer? OR try tilting your amp so it's pointed at your head and not your knees!

Re: Need a bass amp that is cheap and loud

I use a 212 combo from Gallien, it only weighs 37 pounds

I put it on an adjustable-tilt amp stand

it is just barely enough for me, considering the dimensions of the practice room and where the closed back guitar cab is facing (sometimes it is also facing at me)

Re: Need a bass amp that is cheap and loud

Loud and cheap = Peavey

I have a GK Neo 212 cab, It works great and get plenty loud with any amp Ive paired it with, 800RB, 1001RB, Hartke Kilo. But the cab alone used will suck up for budget,
