that 1000 watt carvin looks killer as I see it has a built in noisegate as earlier pointed out

If he doesn't buy it, I just might. I'd run it through 3 15"s and 4 10"s.

if you go the stack route, you can generally find hartke 410xl cabs for around $200, which are good all around cabs with aluminum cones and lots of punch. personally, i've got one that I run an acoustic b200h with, and have a sonic maximizer in the loop to boost the lows a bit and it works really well. super versatile since the acoustic has a 6-band EQ along with a selectable frequency notch filter.

edit:
the b200h is discontinued since the b300h mkII is now available. you should be able to find a b200h used for about $150. pickup a sonic stomp for $50 used, and that's the $400 budget mark

just throwing out there the issues with phasing when mixing different speaker drivers as they may work against each other:
