Need a bridge pickup for King V Pro Mustaine

Hey guys,

The Megadeth forum recomended I come here. I just bought a Jackson King V Pro that's on its way now from Canada.

I want that classic sound from Countdown to Extinction, My Darkest Hour, etc.

I know the option is a Duncan Distortion humbucker for the bridge or a JB.
I'm told new ones shrill and that an 80's Duncan distortion is what I need.

Does the 80's Duncan distortion sound better because it's used and broken in, or is it that new pickups will work the same? Or is the Duncan distortion from the 80's different?

I'm told what I need is one with no logo, only logo on the back and that it must have "DDJ" or "JBJ". Thanks guys,

If someone can sell me one or point me in the right direction, thanks guys.

Dave

Well, Dave Mustaine has his own signature Active set; but if you don't wanna ass around with the battery & stuff, the Distortion is a good shout.

I'm not sure if an 80's one is better or not, maybe it's not as hotly wired or something?

You're best e-mailing the help department of SD to see if that's true.

I've heard great things about new Distortion's though which makes me think it may be a bit of bull**** on their part.

Thanks Rivera,

I'm going to do just that. Yeah, I was also thinking about using a JB but I heard that would be closer to his current sound, which kicks ass by the way.

Someone told me I could ask Duncan to clone the pickup too if I don't find one. Thanks for the heads up,
Dave

Hey, you took my advice. Welcome, lots of good info rolls through these forums on a daily basis by great people. Maybe try searching the forums a bit, it seems i remember something about the 80s duncans sounding better or whatnot, so see what you can find.

Yeah, thanks suislidE03,

I saw someone mention in a search for "DDJ" that the 80's Distortion "blows the ladies away", :smokin:

But seriously, can't wait to come accross one of these badboys. Thanks alot man ! :)

well, i'd stick with the JB personally. coz it will be able to give u better cleans than the DD and it sounds just as good under gain as well.
however, yes the distortion is hotter and really does well for metal.
but since Mustaine got his King V from jacksons, its been JB/Jazz mostly i think.

cheers to another Megadeth fan!! I love Rust In Peace!!! :beerchug:

I love the 'Deth too, but only up to & including the "Countdown to Extinction" album. After that i aint a fan.

Re: Need a bridge pickup for King V Pro Mustaine

Mustaine used the JB/Jazz setup for forever and a day, essentially ever since he switched to Jacksons from his BC Riches...

I personally don´t like the Distortion for anything post KIMB...ABIG ;)

As far as ´"´80s vs new" discussion goes, we´ve rehashed it dozens of times if not more often, and the statements of SD reflect what my ears hear: They´re the same pickups.

BUT: in the guitar world, everything thats old is for some miraculous reason automatically better. I´ve known people who´s tone went to hell after they started thinking like this and purchasing accordingly....

In other words: for the most part it´s people that happen to have one of these PUs lying around so they want to increase the price by spreading rumors and attempting to give older PUs a stigmata they IMO shouldn´t have.

Also, the markings on a pre 2002 duncan are for the most part the same whether it was made in the 80s or in 2001. You run a high risk of shafting yourself, as well as making yourself a target. For example, I also have an old JB in teh neck of my Jackson, the markings are "JBJ"... the guitar was delivered in ´97.

Now, who´s to stop me (or anyone else) from telling you it´s a late ´80s model and selling it for a premium? Exactly, nobody, becasue it´s nearly impossible to date a Duncan that accurately unless it one of the really old ones, because otherwise the markings are the same and any playwear can be real or reliced ;)

for me, just the first 4, cant get into countdown, to friggin slow!

on topic: im pretty sure the "megadeth sound" your after is in the jb through jackson through marshall route.

I'm a weird case. I like all Deth albums, excepting Countdown to Extinction. That's right: I even like Risk from beginning to end, but I can't stand CTE. How's that?

BTW, +1 for the JB.

Just get a JB from the Custom Shop with a Dunaged A5 magnet.

I have 2 Demons. One thats 10+ yrs old and a new one and I must say the old one sounds way better in the very same guitar. And from my research its just the A5 magnet thats aged a little.
