Need a decent set of bass strings for my SUB 4 bass.

TwilightOdyssey

Darkness on the edge of Tone
4 string, full scale, passive pickup, active tone controls. I play with a pick and use a crunchy bass tone.

Thoughts? Light gauge and sub $40 would be ideal.

Thanks in advance!

I have always loved my Ernie Ball Regulars. Versatile and not too heavy.

I'm a GHS Bass Boomers fan.

There's a newer variety called GHS Roundcore Boomers, which I'd best describe as broken-in Boomers (what they'd sound like after a month). I like those as well.

I always go with the heaviest gauge I can get.

Being fairly new to bass I have only tried EBs 45-105 and NYXLs... I prefer the NYXLs.

GHS Boomers.

Compared to Fender and Ernie Ball I think they produce a little more low mid and produce more growl.

That said, I've read that MM basses tend to sound good with EB strings.

Play with a pick you say? Rotosounds are your string!

Thanks for the additional replies; I am going to look into Rotosound and GHS, I think...

D'Addario Pro Steels or EB Cobalts.

Another fan of GHS Boomers on bass. Ive had the best results with 50-115.

Those are the ones I use too. I insist on .115 on the E. Anything else feels too light. It seems very few manufacturers make a .115 E.

My favourites for that sound are Rotosounds and DR Hi-beams.

For me, the issue I have with a lot of string brands is a lacking fundamental, and it makes the note sound like it was played on a spaghetti string - I hate that sound. The GHS .115 for me had the strongest fundamental over other brands like a regular set of Ernie Balls. I have no idea why that difference is there, but I like it. It's the normal roundwound set, but it doesn't sound overly bright like a few other brands and their tone/intonation hasn't really deteriorated much at all after nearly two years (I do boil them to clean them once in a while though).

For me, I just think I get the most low end from this set and I've used many brands over the years. I don't think about it much in terms of analyzing it. I switched to these years ago and have stuck with them.
