Need a new neck PUP for my Jackson..single coil size

Let it B
I've NO experience with Duncans single-coils.

I've got a DD in my new Jackson, and it sounds good, but I'd like something with higher output, a bit less "stratty", and has clarity/definition under high gain. I'm thinkin maybe a DiMarzio HS-3 like good 'ol Yngwie uses, but I'm at a loss here. Is there some Duncan SC that shreds at high gain and still cleans up pretty nice rolling the volume down?

What about one of the "lil" humbuckers? I'm kinda leery of the 59 just for the clarity issue...but perhaps in a bolt on neck It would sound a bit tighter than a gibson style instrument?

BTW..thanx to everyone for putting up with all of my dumb questions here lately. This is an awesome forum. I'm an information whore and have 10 years of catching up to do, so I apologize for the bazillion posts :D

DiMarzio Red Velvet or Seymour Duncan SSL-5 Custom staggered.

The Cool Rails shreds pretty well under high gain, not as well as the Hot Rails. I've got both in the same guitar (Charvel 650xl: Hot Rails/Cool Rails/Distortion, and I've got a Cool Rails/Distortion in my Hamer Californian). The Hot Rails shreds the best but the Cool Rails holds its own and has the better clean side.

neck spot or middle?

well... i'm gonna go out of my way and say try a lil demon.. has a 59type sound but is angrier. probably stays clear under high gain just as much as a 59 would

Cool Rails. It has a ton of definition under high gain and still has very good cleans.

Thank you all for the input. And yes, it's for the neck position. Alder body. Bolt on Maple neck w/ rosewood board. Floyd Rose (Jackson DK2 dinky model)

According to the Duncan website:

The SC-101 single coils represent a tonal cross between Seymour Duncan's SSL-2 Vintage Flat and SSL-6 Custom Flat model

How would the cool rails and ssl-5 custom compare to the above?

For a single coil I really like the SC-101, but it needs a serious boost of gain to saturate it. If I just wanted to do clean and Hendrix type things I wouldn't bother swapping it out.

I was just reading the press release about the duncan "matched sets". Indeed I agree with the results from their marketing research: It's overwhelming at times with all the choices available. :yell: I'll be in the pup soundclips page for 2 hours again tonight :D

I for one think you shuld get something quite powerfull, if you want it to balance well with the distortion...

Yeah..the DD version of the JB has a pretty high output for sure.

I was on the sound clips page last night listening over and over again, and I was surprised how good the Lil Demon sounded clean in the neck. That might be my wisest choice for a good balance of shred/clean sounds and similar output. Cool Rails also sounded great.

But I was also thinking last night of buying a dedicated boost/overdrive with the gain and level set high soley for shred when I use the neck pickup because I'm happy with it for the lower gain and clean sounds.

Interesting, never thought of that, sounds like a good idea :)

Hot rails, they are the smoothest pickups I've ever used. JB Jr. is great but not as hot and less smooth.
